Tuttosport: Pioli to stick with three-man defence but could make four changes

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli is expected to stick with a three-man defence for Friday’s game against Torino but he has some selection doubts, a report claims.

On Friday evening the Rossoneri will challenge Torino – who have already beaten them twice this season – needing a win to rediscover some form and confidence in view of Tuesday evening, when they will host Tottenham in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League.

For the match against the Granata, Tuttosport (via MilanNews) report that Pioli should keep the three-man defence that he used against Inter in the derby defeat on Sunday, but with Malick Thiaw likely to come in for Matteo Gabbia alongside Pierre Kalulu and Simon Kjaer.

At right wing-back there is a battle between Davide Calabria and Alexis Saelemaekers, then in the midfield Tommaso Pobega and Brahim Diaz are vying for a starting spot in Junior Messias’ place.

In attack, Olivier Giroud should team up with Rafael Leao in the front two, meaning Divock Origi would drop to the bench.

  1. He is trying not to lose to f-ing Torino. We are at the point where we are scared of Torino. We don’t deserve to play in Europe. Milan is becoming a joke, and a bad one at that.

  2. For this game without Benna,Tomori,Maignan 3-4-1-2/3-4-3 :Tatasaranu -Thiaw, Kjaer, Kalulu -Theo, Tonali, Krunic, Saelemaekers- De Ketelaere (playmaker/false 9) -Leao, Diaz

  3. Pobega instead of Mesias is even worse. Beter CDK and Diaz as replacements, Sale definitely instead of Calabria, and Thiaw instead of Gabbia.
Calabria and Gabbie must not even be on the bench and for company, they can call Mesias, Tata. Take Tonali to coffee but not on the pitch. Better Vranix in his place.

  4. ‘At right wing-back there is a battle between Davide Calabria and Alexis Saelemaekers’ – not sure anyone likes the look of that (they wouldn’t even make the Primavera at the moment) – I’d rather see Kalulu at RW back.

  5. The perfect, unpresidented opportunity to work on a new system mid season was blown by Pioli. Even playing Pobega at LB, Just incoprehensible.

That said, 3 back has never worked for Pioli at Milan, even when we had players much more suited to it. Cant grasp why Pioli finds it difficult to interprete a 4-3-3 for this team. Should even be the easiest change from 4-2-3-1

i think we need to see if he can be better than Tatarusanu
    – Kalulu, Thiaw, Kjaer (till Tomori gets back to fitness and form), Theo
    – Tonali, Krunic , Vranckxx (till Bennacer gets back)
    – Diaz, Giroud (i believe CDK can prove himself in CF position), Leao.

  6. 3in the back is the right thing to do that gives you so much elasticity and makes you a very tight and compact team.352 can transform easily when is needed in 5311,also in 442 with calabria being proved before to manage a sistem like that to play a role in the midfield, and even in 343.Im pretty sure this could work fur us and it will.We have centrals in the back with decent speed that can cover a lot of space like Kalulu ,tomori and even Thiaw whit his long pase, that will allow us to press high specially when magnan is coming back,so we can recover the ball in important places of the field. Will be very difficult for any team to pass a midfield of 5 with tonali,bena,krunic/baka/pobega,hernandez,calabria/sala that will press like you like crazy.Just dont be so negative and support the team and pioli cause its coming.

  7. Still not the slightest chance for Adli to play? But why, may i ask? What has he done not to deserve just one game? He can’t be that bad, for sure.
