Sky: Pioli tries three-man midfield and three-man defence ahead of Inter game

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli tested two new formations at training today in view of the derby against Inter on Sunday, a report claims.

According to what is being reported by Sky (via SempreMilan.it), Pioli has asked for Maximum concentration at Milanello ahead of the game against the Nerazzurri, so much so that today’s training session lasted 40 minutes longer than usual.

The broadcaster adds that the Rossoneri coach tried a new formation today: the 4-3-3. In addition to the three-man midfield, in the final training matches a three-man defence was also tested with the wing-backs essentially forming a back five.

Three days before the derby, new solutions are needed to shake things up given the awful start to 2023 and in particular the bad defensive record that has seen the team concede 18 goals in seven competitive games since the turn of the year.

Pioli tried out various players in the two systems, with Simon Kjaer among the protagonists after he was excluded from the starters against Sassuolo.

  1. Well, let’s hope this is actually true. I’ve been calling for this to tighten up the defense. I would be surprised if he actually does it tho.

  2. Move Theo there or at least forward as Deschamps does, our passing is abysmal from the back Kjaer knows it Maignan knew it their clearances were always past mid field.

  3. Pioli going to play 3-3-4 not 4-3-3 . What a jokerrr
To stop inter quick counter , pioli should play 4-1-4-1. Like this defense not exposed. DeK AMF. Krunic on right. Tonali free to t and Pogeba in right< switching with DK. Defense Kalulu_Tomori-keajer- Theo. Goalkeep ? No comments

  5. Guys, chills. Pioli maybe not a top coach you guys all want, but he took us well 2.5 years regardless lots of headscratching moments

We cant pay top players and surely we cant pay top coaches too (tuchel, etc), moreover top coaches would want to have major budget to overhaul the squad

There are no good cheap coach out there and replacing Pioli would bring more harm than good

Stick with him is the best choice out of other worse options out there

    1. We can have a better coach with cheap budget, how much is Gasperini collecting at atalanta, the man is far better tactically dan pioli,he can also work with low budget transfer as we no get money to buy top player

      1. You’re not making any sense here Oyedele.

If Gasperini is “far better tactically” than Pioli then why he never win a scudetto with Atalanta and also lost against Pioli multiple times. I didn’t see Atalanta in UCL round of 16 either.
