GdS: Pioli weighing up two alternative systems including a three-man defence

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is weighing up two alternative formations for his side to shift into compared to the standard 4-2-3-1, according to a report.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport report, the first alternative system that Pioli has in mind is a 4-3-3 which was seen in glimpses last season. It involves a back four of Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez plus Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer in the midfield.

The third midfielder would be Yacine Adli but this role could also be taken by Tommaso Pobega or Rade Krunic. Charles De Ketelaere would be on the right (Saelemaekers or Messias as back-up), Olivier Giroud the centre-forward (or Origi) and Rafael Leao on the left.

The second formation is a bit more radical as it involves a three-man defence. Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori would be the three centre-backs with Calabria and Theo as wing-backs. Tonali and Bennacer would be the double pivot with Leao on the left, De Ketelaere (or Adli) on the right and Giroud (or Origi) as the striker.

  1. Why not The old diamond formation. That way Tonali,Bennacer, Adli can be the central midfielders and Cdk at nr 10. Then Leao and Origi at front.

    1. Because that make Leao less effective, he play the best from Wing – run down the left wing and send crosses, or cut inside and giving pass/shot.

  2. Totally wrong.

    The formation will be 4231.
    Hernandes, tomori, kjaer, calabria/kalulu.
    Tonali, bennacer.
    Leao, adli, dekatelere,
    Origi.

  3. Me personally I would be happy with these formations than the 4231 I feel like we don’t have enough attacking players for that (of good enough quality)

    1. Yep. And switching the formation during the matches to mess up opponent’s tactics will be useful too. Now Milan has the players that actually enable that option as most of the players can play many different positions (unlike when we had one-trick-ponies such as Suso, Kessie, etc.)

      1. Kessie was a one trick pony??? LOL idiot. Suso YES. Kessie only filled in as CAM; played every mid position including DM and from his DM spot slid into CB when on OFFENSE when Theo attacked on the left flank which allowed Tomori to slide into LB. Did you even watch any games?? This ain’t PlayStation kid lol. Learn tactics my friend. Your just bitter Kessie didn’t resign w us. Get over it. No need to bash the guy and say he was a one dimensional player. Barca do not sign one dimensional players. Wake up

        1. One trick pony just like you. Fearless keyboard warrior typing all kinds of crap every day without any idea how the real world works.

          I know I speak for everyone here as we’re all tired of your everyday BS.

    1. We played with other formations last season too. Pioli even switched the tactics & formation during matches. Yet the scudetto came. Was it only luck? I don’t think so.

  4. I don’t know why the media keeps pushing this 3 men defense on Milan. Outside of the few years under Zaccheroni, Milan has never played with 3 men in the back.
    Plus Milan only has 4 defenders in the squad with a week left before the start of the season and no sign of another CB coming anytime soon. There is 0 chance 3 men defense happens Pioli tried it once last year vs Juventus and it lasted only till half time when he switched to back 4.
    Also with 3 in the back Leao will have to play as a 2nd striker closer to the goal instead of hugging the sideline because he would be in Theo’s way.

  5. We should play 4-3-3

    Put Saelemaekers into midfield;

    You will have substitutes in the midfield: Krunic, Saele and Pobega;

    Saelemaekers is a great player. He will kill in the midfield. We don’t need an addition.

  6. We have only 4 valid CB, how tf are we supposed to play 3 at the back.
    Could you guys do homework before posting these bullcrap articles?
