CM: Pobega and Brahim Diaz’s roles open new solutions for ‘chameleonic’ Milan

AC Milan have constantly evolved from a tactical point of view since Stefano Pioli took charge and it could be that Saturday’s win over Juventus opened up a new instalment.

Calciomercato.com report that the comfortable win over Juventus just three days after the collapse at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea once again demonstrated the resilience and spirit of the group, who must face Graham Potter’s men again tomorrow in what will be a litmus test for the new system.

The report mentions how there was a 4-3-3 hybrid in the game against Empoli after the injury to Alexis Saelemaekers, and the defeat in London – during which Rade Krunic was played on the right but had little impact – could represent a turning point.

With Saelemaekers and Junior Messias out, Pioli opted to field Tommaso Pobega to add balance in the middle of the field (Rade Krunic could also occupy that role) thus freeing Brahim Diaz to drift into wide areas, and Charles De Ketelaere did the same off the bench too.

The Spaniard showed against Juve that he is a player capable of adapting to the team’s needs to read opponents and the moments of the match, hunting for space between the lines and opening up games with his dribbles in isolation, and it certainly opens the idea of similar solutions moving forward.

There are various players who might be more useful in the box-to-box role of a midfield three too such as Krunic, Yacine Adli, Pobega and Aster Vranckx. The ‘chameleonic’ Milan continues, with Pioli learning more about his team with each game.
