GdS: PSG’s €70m bid, the €150m clause and a slowdown – latest on Leao’s renewal

By Oliver Fisher -

After reports of intense negotiations towards the end of last season, things have gone quiet on the Rafael Leao renewal front.

La Gazzetta dello Sport writes that ‘there has been no progress so far’ because the last round of talks ‘ended in an unpleasant stalemate’. However, Milan consider Leao one of the five or six essential parts of the squad moving forward.

Leao’s performances have attracted interest from the likes of PSG who made an offer of €70m when Leonardo was the sporting director, but it was rejected and the Rossoneri are protected by a €150m clause that has been included in Rafa’s contract since his arrival from Lille.

After a decidedly static June due to the change in ownership and the delayed renewals of Maldini and Massara, the priority of the Rossoneri is to strengthen the squad with an attacking midfielder, a right winger and a midfielder.

Key renewals are also on the agenda but not in the immediacy, because time and clarity are needed. Leao has made his desire to stay at Milanello clear but the demand is €6m net per season plus bonuses.

Salaries are a very sensitive topic at Casa Milan because of the internal ceiling and negotiations over signings to take the next step, but the management are clear that they want to avoid at all costs a situation where Leao is just one year from his expiry.

  1. This is the biggest challenge that Maldini will have to face going forward.

“Renew or leave” should be the message for both Leao and Bennacer, rather we get offers of 85 and 40 millions for them then to postpone the conflict for the last year where the player’s agent holds all the power.

It would suck to have to rebuild players for those areas, but if a player wants to leave, there’s no point in forcing them to stay.

At this point, Mendes can and will always find a club that is willing to offer a very large salary that we won’t be able to match. Same for Moussa Sissoko the agent of Bennacer, Adli and also of Ousmane Dembele.

Unfortunately, the reality is that Serie A is mainly seen as a jumping point towards Premier League, or a few other top clubs.

    1. Yeah but that’s not even the problem of serie a, all leagues apart from the Prem, also players from Spain go to England now

    2. I just hope he renews or we get like 70/90M for him, let’s be realistic he was great for the last 3 months but he is never worth 100M, Lautaro for example is doing for 2.5 years what he is doing for 3 months and also in Argentina team. He’s is really good and a superstar in the making so better we keep him

  2. Renew or sell him 70-80m euro. I dont think he is worth to 100m euro . Give him deadline date for renew, dont waiting till last 1 year contract . If he renew good for us,but if he dont want then we can use that money from sell him to instant buy CDK , new player for DmF and noa lang

  3. bad advice given ti him made him leave sporting, cos the idiot who told him he could unilaterally terminate his contract was a fool. now he is asking for an undue salary because he has a levy to pay, 18M or so. if they do not renew, lets accept only their release clause and no less.
