GdS: Record breaker heading for renewal – Milan have clear ideas on Giroud’s future

By Oliver Fisher -

Olivier Giroud rightly grabbed all the headlines after scoring his 52nd goal for France which allowed him to overtake Thierry Henry as their all-time top goalscorer.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes that if Giroud were 10 years younger he would probably be at the centre of all the transfer market gossip that usually accompanies the excellent performances of players who perform well at the World Cup.

However, Giroud is instead experiencing a second wave of youth having won the trust of everyone from Milan to his national team. His important goals led the Rossoneri to the Scudetto, winning back his spot under Didier Deschamps in the process, and a contract renewal is very much on Milan’s agenda.

The situation of Giroud’s contract is very clear as per the paper: the agreement signed last summer expires in June 2023 but his performances – both in the past season and in the current one – are pushing the management to offer the Frenchman a well-deserved renewal .

Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara were going to make an offer to the former Chelsea man either at the end of February or the beginning of March, but considering the level he is playing at, they are likely to have a bid ready on his return from the World Cup.

Everything points to an extension until 2024 and perhaps even to a small pay rise. He currently earns €3.2m net per year and it is not excluded that this figure will increase slightly, as a sign of gratitude for the fact he continues to be decisive.
