Report: Blow for Milan and Arsenal as Man City now lead race for €58m Bundesliga ace

Manchester City leading the race to sign RB Leipzig defender and reported AC Milan target Dayot Upamecano, according to a report.

Upamecano has been repeatedly linked with a move to Milan over the last few months as the Rossoneri look to give Alessio Romagnoli a reliable long-term centre-back partner.

Tuttosport recently reported that Arsenal are ahead of Milan in the race to sign the Frenchman, who will be sold this summer unless Leipzig can somehow agree a renewal on his deal which expires in 2021.

French outlet Soccer Link claims that Upamecano has been observed multiple times by Arsenal scouts as David Luiz, Sokratis and Shkodran Mustafi could all leave the club, however they have stalled on making a definitive move.

In addition, the 21-year-old wants to play Champions League football next season which rules Milan out of the race, and Man City boss Pep Guardiola is looking for upgrades on the inconsistent duo of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi.

As a result, the current Premier League champions are leading the race to sign Upamecano, who will only extend his current deal if the Bundesliga side keep his €58m release clause in there.

Bayern Munich are also credited with interest but they are said to be stalling too due to the economic demands.
