Reports: Milan goalkeeper to join Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan

By Isak Möller -

Devis Vasquez arrived at AC Milan in January earlier this year and after making a few appearances with the Primavera side, the Colombian international is set for a loan move to England.

The 25-year-old was brought in by Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara amid the injury of Mike Maignan but he was never called into action. He trained with the first team throughout the spring but only ended up making two appearances for the Primavera side.

According to Luca Maninetti and Daniele Longo, Vasquez is now set to join the Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. It will be a season-long loan and the move should be completed very soon.

Milan signed Marco Sportiello on a free transfer earlier this summer and Mike Maignan is obviously the first choice between the sticks. The third choice will be one of the Primavera goalkeepers, meaning the department is very much covered.

  1. Why can’t we just sell him?

He clearly has no future at the club so why don’t we just get him off our books?

The only players we should be loaning out are youth products who we think will actually have a remote chance of making the first team.

If we have a player like that (and being one of the top clubs on the planet (relative to the millions of other clubs on the planet) many/most of these players should be like that) then that player is a valuable asset and so should be treated as such.

That means having an actual plan.

That means not deciding in the last minute to loan them out to some random club that has a completely different culture and playing style, only for that random club to change its mind a few months later, cancel the loan after just 4 months, send them home like some out of control school child.

It means loaning these assets to targeted clubs for extended periods of at least 12-24 months with a full preseason.

But it’s hard to focus on assets when you’ve got to faff about with all these other randoms (as well as the numerous failed signings from previous seasons).

There is only so much time in the day and football teams are limited to 11 players so a bit of focus would be nice. That is apparently why directors get paid the big bucks – to FOCUS

Did I mention I hate the transfer market?
