Repubblica: Furlani raises Milan’s summer transfer budget

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani has raised the transfer budget for the summer window in the wake of recent events at the club, a report claims.

As has been reported by La Repubblica (via Milan News), the original transfer budget for the summer without selling any players was €35 million and no more.

This is the figure that Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara were told they would be given prior to their departure from the club.

Furlani has got complete autonomy over the transfer window for Milan now and regardless of the fact that Sandro Tonali is set to join Newcastle in a €70-80 million deal, he has raised the base figure that Milan can spend.

It is not clear by how much, but the report also states that the ceiling Milan have got in place for player salaries should stay the same as it was before to avoid skewing the structure.

  1. So the idea was to deny Maldini decent budget get him fired, get his job then raise budget but continue signing same players he had closed already (Loftus-Cheek, Kamada etc)..just brilliant!

    1. In the end Milan ended up doing as Maldini told them, except for one thing:

Maldini want to keep the key players but Milan sell Tonali.

I guess we now know the real reason he got fired… his refusal to sell key players. This is not a player in last year of contract, this is a player with long-term contract.

      1. yeah Maldini was so perfect he never did anything wrong ever

I can see the pattern now, even if Milan win next season you’ll just say it was Maldini’s influence

AC Maldini for you as always

        1. And if Milan reaches the UCL final but lose it’s because of Maldini they got there but they lost because Maldini isn’t here anymore. 🙂

        2. @ Boulden shut up you baby fan
Shut up ac Milan fan of yesterday
What do you know about Milan?
What’ have you seen with Milan before? Where when you in the battle against the old ladies when all our defenders were injured only Maldini was available and he delivered
Where were u novice fan against juventus in 2003 champions league final when Milan was playing with a player critically injured and Maldini stepped up
What about the drama against Florentina it’s was Maldini against Gabriel Bastituta I doubt if your little brain will know him
Stop talking what you don’t know.
Arsenal Fc bought a single player for 105m but the management was given Maldini 35m for the whole season and you hear talking rubbish. U don’t have class reason you are blind to see why Maldini left

          1. These kids are less than baby fans.
They don’t know anything about Maldini and they don’t know anything about football.
These Americans want to run football in Italy like basketball in the US.
The only positive I can see coming from these owners is of they get us a new stadium, if not, they are not good for AC Milan and these weak fans should go and support other teams and leave AC Milan alone.

        3. Others think he was so good as much as you think he was so bad, thats human life, why cant we just accept that opinions will always differ, all of us are right, and noone of us is wrong, and we are just fans, our opinions dont even matter to anyone, even to one another

        4. Wow, you make bold claim that Maldini never did anything wrong. You must be his number one fan.

I am supporting AC Milan but you insist that it has to be AC Maldini. Are you his marketing manager?

    2. Mi friend the buget even if increases a bit will still be the budget of a mid table team no of one that can win trophies, this americans transformed ac milan in a mediocre team who buys what others dont need, out of forma players, cheap players, în the ideea of buyng cheap and sell with profit

  2. The refusal to sell key players like Donnarumma, Hakan, Kessie, Romagnoli.
Better to let them walk for free than sell him was Maldini idea.
Maldini wasn’t denied a decent budget by the owners.
He denied himself a decent budget by his inability to sell players and losing them for nothing.
People forget that those players were key players as well, not just Tonali.

      1. Stood up how?
        By losing them for nothing?
I am not siding with anyone.
The only loser in the whole Maldini standing up to agents is Milan.
Milan lost key players and Milan lost money by them leaving for free.
People have somehow convinced themselves to believe that Maldini is the moral winner in this. That’s crazy.

        1. Let me dissect it for you case by case

Romagnoli: Nobody was interested seriously in him to really make a sale. And he was a no to be renewed with his salary
Kessie: he promised to renew and you know what happened later. Anyway, I can understand blaming Maldini here, you don’t wait the final year to renew but let’s also be aware that this guy had two decent seasons on him in his full contract.
Hakan: a player who was decent a year and a half and honestly was also a bad apple in the dressing room. Not really a lot of interest to sell him for real money – you just need to see how he was almost forced to go to Inter since there were no serious offers for him even as a free agent.
Donnarumma: Raiola, all said. And he was a problem from the beginning and in that particular issue I can blame Maldini a bit, he needed to dispatch him and he refused. Maybe this guy could have brought good money to the club. That maybe was a mistake, not selling him since he was under Raiola wing and we know that means problems.

And in the end directors in a club have not a lot to say when players are in contracts to end. Player will is what counts. For example, check the Skriniar debacle at Inter. Now that is a big loss in money and no one will say Marotta is incompetent but in this situation he screwed it big time

        2. Z tell me how YOU were going to sell Dollaruma with Mino as your agent who wanted a fat commission and was refusing offers. Also tell me who would be his replacement

          1. “Z tell me how YOU were going to sell Dollaruma with Mino as your agent who wanted a fat commission”

Pause and think about it for a sec. Raiola would have gotten a fat paycheck for Gigio’s signature. If Milan wanted to make money afterwards and sell, who would have been the first person to initiate the process? Raiola. Why? Because of the NEW signing bonus. Money was everything to him. Ideally his clients would have switched teams every summer so he could have gotten maximum amount of signing bonuses.

          2. Raiola sold Zlatan every other year. Outside of his move from PSG to ManUtd, Zlatan was getting sold, and Raiola was still making his commissions. Agent gets paid with transfers, be it on a free or with fee.
Once you sell Donnarumma, you have money to pick and choose who your next GK will be. Have people forgotten that we actually signed Maignan and upgraded on Donnarumma even without the money of Donnarumma sale. Imagine if we also had the money from Gigio sale. We could have had a decent RW , a striker, a n 10 by now as well.
There was a lot of money lost from those guys leaving for free

          3. “Agent can get larger signing bonus if the new club do not spend money for transfer fee.”

Sure. But you’ll have to wait for 3-5 years for contract to run out. That’s a loooong time without the millions coming to the agents bank account.

          4. Sure, wait for few years and his client will be at a club that pay high agent fee regularly rather than a club that can only pay low-medium agent fee. Patience pay out in the long term for him (his son, as he had passed away).

        3. Did you forget that even after Milan signed Maignan, Gigio took a while to get his contract signed at PSG. If he was free and it took a while for him to get offered contracts (I forgot I think it was similar to Milan’s anyway?), how were you going to have him sold exactly? When he was on the last months of his contracts, most established teams have their GK position covered.

Gigio and Mino took a gamble that they could press Milan to fork pretty penny for having him continue his career in here, but their bluffs were called. And the replacement is even better tbh, so I argue that we actually saved money here. Sure we missed out on potential what, 40-50M? but his salary alone might make it difficult to move him and it would be a huge burden to our budget.

Out of the 4 mentioned, Gigio/Hakan/Kessie/Alessio, I dont even know if we could’ve sold anyone? Hakan was only offered by Inter, Romagnoli’s salary is getting too high for Serie-A teams and no EPL teams came for him, Kessie was probably the one we could have sold, and you could probably blame Maldini for getting played by his sweet words. But having said that, he contributed in our Scudetto runs. so it still was worth keeping him at the time.

        4. Ok, firstly, I see you completely ignore player and agent power like you’ve literally said in your post to make the determination.

Secondly at what point did u think of selling? Can’t be the final year of contract right because then dollar ran down the contract like he did. So has to be the year before that…so 2019. And how much would you have gotten for him then? 20-30m perhaps for a young inexperienced goalie? And replacement?

Third: Look at Raiola’s list of clients and you can tell how many times they’ve ran down contracts. It nets him a bigger commission (harder to get a big commission on top of a transfer fee) and nets his players bigger salaries. Case in point Dollaruma, Pogba, Matuidi, Mazorui, Ibra

Remember he wanted a 2 year contract worth 12m per year for Dollar and if he signed, we wouldn’t sell him in the first year and after the first year guess what, we’re back to square one…

These details ppl miss when they think it’s simply oh renew or oh just sell. Those 3 players in particular were all playing games. We got all the other key players to sign, the question really should be why those 3 didn’t. It was greed and now we have players who only WANTED to play for Milan. Sure we didn’t get money but we got UCL quali because Dollar and got a Scudetto because of Kessie so it wasn’t zero.

        5. The agents and players sought to pressure Milan and Maldini into forcing a sale knowing that the media and fans like you would be more concerned about MONEY than PRIDE.

Maybe stop being so obsessed with money, money, money, and you might actually start enjoying the SPORT of football.

        6. Kessie lied and said he was gonna sign a new contract and changed his mind at the last minute. Romagnoli and Hakan were let go because their time in Milan was over and not priority’s to resign. Gigi was a major brat that forced us to sign his terrific brother as a back up and had the greediest agent in the world. So yes Maldini stood up to them and didn’t give them the world . Instead he went out and signed Magic Mike. a much better keeper and cheaper than Gigi. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

    1. Agreed…. it doeshurtas when we lost those players before….
……BUT boy does it feel different with 60 some million. Ack to spend….

If i am a ceo and i see my team somehow turned a 35 mil capex budget(which is likely all thats self sustain possible right now) into a 90milcapex window. As a ceo id say, yeah good job, ill complete you 100m

    2. So its all Maldini and nothing to do with the players (agents) and their salary demands. Running their contract out is a way to get way way higher salary.
Read up on how the bosman works.

If you raise one player to 6 million salary it might cost you 30 40 a season doen the line because every player will want more.

Milan is today a top 4 club and last time i checked our salary bill was mid table

  3. F*ck this club. 35m it was gonna be 55. Let’s not forget we won the league, ran to the semis and qualified again for champions league. F**kin tight c@nts. Probably back to what we thought we were starting with minus tonali. Absolute shysters

  4. It’s not about budget. 35 millions or extended 55 millions would be enough to get us players this clown is now signing. It was about different views, Maldini did not cash in on Kessie and Dollarumma cause he put sports result in front of making money and balance sheets. Cause he is AC Milan. Cardinale and Furlani are all about capitalising on players, resale value etc. Business model and they don’t really care for the history and philosophy of this institute. Selling Tonali is easy, anyone could do it. Let’s see him selling our deadweight – Rebic, Origi, Messias, Toure.

    1. You must be a child and not remember Milan being banned from Europe for ignoring balance sheets. Go learn about FFP you ignoranus!

      1. Ignoring balance sheets? Where did I say anything about that? I am still talking within the budget that was given right? And calling me child and then ignoranus? That’s corny. And childish. And I’ve been a Milan fan since you were probably still swimming in your daddy’s sack.

        1. What you said literally implies it’s the culture of Milan is to put results ahead of the balance sheets like there is no institution that will ban Milan’s involvement in Europe. Maldini is a legend on the pitch and a mixed bag off it but he by no means is the club.

Your words reek of youthful ignorance and pessimism…

    2. You guys are so nostalgic about the past and history. Tell me one top team in the whole world who try to not make money. We’re not in the 1990’s. Teams make money from selling good layers as assets and reinvest some how in other players, sporting results which will bring sponsorships, selling sporting goods, and so on…losing players for free while you can cash in has never been considered by any teams, unless the players is worth nothing. Look at what’s happening now between PSG and Mbappe, what happened between Barca and Messi. You shouldn’t hide from the reality

      1. And not forget to mention the Financial Fair Play rulesset by the UEFA where you have to show you have what you want to invest. You can’t invest anything even if you try to sell all our dead weight like Saleamakes, Origi, Rebic, CDK, Krunic, Balo Touré, Calabria, Pobega, and so on…Hold on to your history and past philosophy without adapting to the new one and you will find ACMilan spending another 20 years as a club which other international medias only talk about when they talk about clubs who were great in the past and people now tend to forget like Nottingham Forest and Hamburger

        1. Why you kids have this need to teach everyone about FFP. It sounds fancy to you and now you wanna throw it in everyone’s face showing you know what’s about. Where have I addressed FFP in my comment? Go do some Wim Hoff breathing exercises, read my comment again and come back to me. Where did I say Maldini ignored balance sheets and club’s financial status? He worked his socks off to give us the team within club’s financial abilities and would do so even today if he was here still. I am discussing the difference between visions – one put sports result on top of business and new chiefs are all about resale, making profit off the groomed talents etc. Maldini was a Sports director and now we have an accountant working as our sports director. That says enough

    3. How is not selling Kessie and Gigio “putting sports result in front of making money and balance sheets”? Basic Sports Director 101 – make sales for outgoing players to improve your mercato.

      1. Can you tell what is the form of these players 2years before their contract?
Do you think we can get something?

Until Dida came as a coach, Dollarumma is worse and still young. Maybe 10m.
Kessie played 2good seasons and also its the last 2. We have already seen the drama or salary requests they made to renew. Sending them free is not just the Maldini idea and it’s also the management.
You can’t sell a player forcefully and Maldini just taken the role of sporting director when it’s 1/2years contract, you better blame the management.

Not renewing Chalha and Romagnoli is by the management, they don’t want to pay the salaries they requested.
Can you show us the better sporting director with the budget we spent and do remember the situation of our team before Maldini and when Maldini was sacked.

  5. 35 million to begin with??? I know Serie A is poor but really now?😂😂
35 million?? Wow, for all the good work done In the last 3 years to be given 35 Milan the crossroads of the project?
I’m a highly optimistic guy but I really don’t see how we’re going to take the next step if that can be a whole budget, not even for January.
    Let’s see.
    Forza Milan

  6. An article about nothing….. But it generates 25+ comments. “Hey so, Milan had 35mil to start with, but then they sold Tonali, so now they they have more to spend, we think, but we don’t know how much” LOL!!! Stellar journalism there 🙂

    1. I think they reached their active engagement point where they can literally write the brown fox jumps over the lazy dog and still generate comments..kudos to them but at the same time the comments are a mental health cesspool

      1. oh for sure.. their traffic exploded here. used to be tumbleweeds and crickets here…

THIS is moneyball approach – BS articles about nothing in particular that generate COMMENTS LOL!!!

        See, it does work! LMAO!!!

        1. I’m one of the original commenters back when the authors of the articles used to take things personal and delete your comments ever so often. Now we have like ppl cursing and stuff….but they got Volume so does well for their advertising analytics

          1. Check out football Italia website. Quite a number of the users here came from There. Their comments platform is finally functional again.

  7. They wont sell anybody anymore key player from that article. But they still need to sell deadwood in bench like origi, rebic, junior messias, devis vasques, ballo toure. Our double pivot tonali – bennacer are so bad last season even RLC can bossing them . If only last season we buy DmF with that 56m budget like amrabat ( cost 30-40m euro ) not CDK , that will make tonali safe from sale because they dont need money to buy DMF like RLC & yunus anymore instead just using tonali – amrabat as double pivot with back up pobega, krunic ,bennacer ( injured) . We must pay the price wasting all budget last season with tonali lost. Look at CDK awful performance in euro u21 with belgium, no club are willing to buy him now,.

  8. Why selling tonali can be a blessing in disguise it happened in the past, present and it would continue in the future, big clubs sacrifice one or two key players and still achieve success. References juve’s Zidane to Madrid result scudetto Napoli’s insigne and khalidou result scudetto, Cristiano’s transfer to juve result la Liga and champions League Barca’s ronaldinho and eto exit result la Liga and champions League, Liverpool’s cotonho transfer to Barca result champions League and premieship etc to mention just a few

  9. Yes, Furlani, you give yourself that extra money so you can sign more overrated and overpriced players from Chelsea.

    You absolute weasel.
