Repubblica: Modern stadium and entertainment district – ‘Milan citadel’ planned in San Donato

By Oliver Fisher -

Some interesting details have emerged regarding AC Milan’s new stadium idea in San Donato from a document that has been submitted as part of the formal plans.

La Repubblica (via MilanNews) reports that there has been a document which is over 300 pages long called ‘Strategic environmental assessment – Preliminary report’ which the SportLifeCity company – owner of the San Francesco area on which Milan would like to build the new stadium – delivered to the Council of San Donato Milanese.

Some new interesting details emerge on the potential future home of Milan, who want to create a real sports and entertainment district rather than just building a new stadium.

One of the innovations that emerge from the document is that a ‘podium’ of 160 thousand square metres will be created on which – in addition to the 70,000-seater stadium – several buildings will be built for various uses (hotels, museum, offices).

At the centre of everything there will be a large square for public use, around which four buildings are planned which will host the AC Milan headquarters, the club museum, a new AC Milan Team Store and a hotel with around 200 rooms.

On the ground floor of these buildings, 4,100 square meters of shops and restaurants overlooking the stadium, which will not only be used for football matches but also for concerts and other events.

The project envisages new public transport connections and hypothesises that the new citadel can also be reached by bicycle or on foot. The construction of three new roundabouts, new motorway junctions and two cycle-pedestrian bridges is also planned.

Milan would also like to create a large natural park. In the final pages of the dossier, the two alternative hypotheses to the stadium in San Donato are also mentioned: the 60,000 seat facility in San Siro and that of the La Maura area, where a 70,000 spectator stadium would instead be built.
