AC Milan need to sign a new midfielder during the mercato, and they have tried extensively to sign one player, and a report has suggested the role is, perhaps, the last thing missing from the team.
It is difficult to pinpoint when exactly Milan determined they needed a new midfielder. However, with the recurring injury problems, and a lack of stability, it became evidently clear that the area needed some focus this summer.

The plan was conceived before Paulo Fonseca’s arrival, but with the Portuguese coach wanting to ‘beef up’ the squad, the plan merged perfectly, and the Rossoneri got to work identifying candidates, and here we are.
Unfortunately, there has not been any movement for a midfielder yet, or at least positive movement, and this is because the Diavolo are struggling in the battle to get Youssouf Fofana. Whilst the French midfielder has given a move the nod, there has not been an agreement with Monaco yet.
With this, La Repubblica (via Milan News) have reported that the mercato has been positive so far, but there is a glaring issue – the lack of a midfield arrival. As the report suggests, a midfielder who can cover the defence and balance the team is missing. It is not a new problem, though, and the quality has been missing at Milan since Kessie and Tonali departed.

They wanna play fast modern football but they don’t want to admit to themselves that to do that you need a Rodri type midfielder. Problem is Rodri types don’t exactly grow on trees. True DMs have become something of a luxury
Technically, Bennacer also has same characteristics, he’s just shorter and not as dominant.

Pobega, Thiaw and Adli all next to exit. Maybe we need to go for Richard Rios or Johnny Cardoso and forget all about Fofana. Both of them are more strictly defensive midfielders.

I’d take Amrabat now..he’s the best option on the market and knows serie a, some eu experience as well. No world beater but would get the job done.

Correct. Amateur hour indeed. This squad has been screaming for a dm since kessie left. Start of the new season is only a few days away and no dm yet. Unless Fonseca has worked something out with the current squad, expect to concede many goals again this season. Also, The way that management has been moving unloading surpluses in our squad is extremely slow. Hope Cardinale gets rid of these clowns and hires experienced, proven directors. Enough with amatours like furlani and co.
It’s pretty much the same in every transfer window.
We rarely focus on the key weaknesses in the squad and instead get distracted by signing multiple players for positions we already have covered.
This is why Milan have not had an established CB partnership for over 20 years (the last CB partnership that played together consistently across seasons was Maldini and Nesta).
It’s why we haven’t had a CF play for us for multiple seasons.
We are constantly fiddling in the same positions and not dealing with the key weaknesses.
This is what drives most of the frustration in my posts. Because I have been saying the same thing for 15 years now.

The bigger problem is the lack of sales and thus lack of spaces in the squad. We need to move on two or three of Adli, Jovic, Thiaw, Salamaekers, Okafor, Bennacer or others just to be able to register anyone we bring in. Not saying I particularly want any of those players to go, but we already have one or two more than we can register.
Saelemakers, Okafor and Bennacer sales don’t make any sense.
Jovic goes if ST arrives, not the other way around. he has 1 year with minimal salary easy to terminate if it gets annoying.
Pogeba, Adli and Thiaw are another story, but since we don’t have much time I don’t think they will f around in defense when it’s quite packed after Emerson.
Pobega doesn’t use a registration spot; he stays.
At the moment, we have one more ‘non Italian trained’ than we can register for Serie A (I think it’s one, but it might be two). So if we bring in another player, that’s at least two others we can’t register.
Our best bet right now is to play RLC in the double pivot and hope he can grow in that position. He is the only midfielder in our squad who possesses the characteristics of a true DM

Again, it depends how you look at it. Pirlo-Gatusso are clear examples (Pirlo CDM; Gatusso CM), but you also have Casemiro-Kroos, Busquets-Xavi were also different pairing. But the fact still stays the same that one does more def (both do but one does it better), one is creative and conductor for building from the back.
Sure and I’m saying, on a technical lvl, benacer is closer to gattuso, casemiro or busq than ruben .

Ofc benacer is also closer to pirlo, kroos and xavi than ruben but that’s a different thing for a different time.
definitly, I meant that I would put Bennacer closer to Pirlo-Kroos base, since he does dictate the game from the depth. he’s good in possesion and can be quite grita as well, long balls of course are such a huge thing as well.
for me Fofana is this Gatusso-esque CM, hence why I think just because he isn’t a CDM, he would give us that balance that we lacked since Kessie. I keep seeing people crying over CDMs, but it’s not Fifa, right?!

Because he wants to make space to make a forward pass. This is something a coach needs to explain to him when to dribble and when to stay safe and back pass or side pass

Once the magic’s gone it’s hard to recreate (especially when you string your old club along and then leave for free).
Moncada and the management have failed the DM mission. Do not even give me the politics behind this failure. No DM by mid-August is simply a failure. The new DM has missed the preseason.
