Repubblica: Revenue and Champions League advantage – what is at stake on Sunday

By Oliver Fisher -

Winning the Scudetto is of course all about the honour of the title and the trophy the team receives, but there is also even more at stake on Sunday.

At 18:00 CEST at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia, Milan will take to the field to face Sassuolo, while Inter will host Sampdoria at San Siro. A win or a draw for the Rossoneri would be enough for them to be crowned champions for the first time since 2010-11 which would be an incredible achievement.

However, La Repubblica (via SempreMilan.it) report how there is not only sporting glory up for grabs, but also economic incentives. When looking at TV rights, sponsorship and qualification for the next SuperCoppa, winning the title is worth an extra €10m.

The champions of Serie A earn €25.6m, about €7m more than second place get. It would also be advantageous in view of the 2022-23 edition of the Champions League as Stefano Pioli’s side would secure pot one for the group stage draw.

  1. 1st pot is the most important thing of them all. This year we were in pot 4 and ended up in the Group of Death, next we can avoid Real, Liverpool or Man City, PSG, Bayern, Ajax which is huge.
