Romagnoli reveals that Sarri’s instructions at Lazio are ‘similar’ to Giampaolo’s at Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

Alessio Romagnoli is enjoying a new lease of life with Lazio and he has claimed that the current system under Maurizio Sarri is similar to Marco Giampaolo’s at AC Milan.

Romagnoli spent seven years with the Rossoneri working under a number of different head coaches from Vincenzo Montella and Gennaro Gattuso to Marco Giampaolo and Stefano Pioli. He decided to leave and join his boyhood club Lazio once his deal expired in June.

His last action for Milan was a fitting one though, as he raised the Scudetto trophy to the sky as a symbol of what has been a path of growth culminating in a trophy. Now, Romagnoli seems to be enjoying being a key part of a Lazio side that have let in just 8 goals in 13 games.

Romagnoli spoke to Sky Italia after Lazio beat Roma 1-0 in the derby, with the 27-year-old obviously a big factor in the clean sheet, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.

“The team have been working with Sarri for a year and a half. They worked for a long time, I had Giampaolo at Milan who has similar movements. We work every day to improve and we are happy, but the work is not only ours, but also of the midfielders and forwards, to whom we must say thank you,” he said.

    1. Pioli’s system relies on centre backs that can defend 1v1 very well. Tomori, Kalulu and Kjaer (via excellent positioning skills) can do this very well and would have been above him in the pecking order. Plus Gabbia who is like a younger Kjaer. Romagnoli has said that he prefers team defending. He also sorely lacks in 1v1 situations

  1. Yeah, decent CB but he is not comfortable with our way of defending, and being 4th choice surely won’t satisfy him. A great servant for the club nonetheless, never talk bad about Milan and never publicly complained, the Scudetto is a fitting parting gift for his 7 years at club.

Hope the best of him for Lazio and Italia except when he is playing against us, as that will be better for Italian football as a whole.
