Romania head coach responds to idea of Coubis call-up as Mancini and Italy lurk

By Oliver Fisher -

The head coach of the Romanian national team Eduard Iordanescu has responded to the idea of calling up AC Milan Primavera defender Andrei Coubis.

Coubis has been one of the stand-out performers in Ignazio Abate’s side forming the bedrock of the defence playing as both a right-back and as a centre-back, even having some training sessions with the senior side.

The 19-year-old is a youth international for Romania having represented them up to U21 level so far, and he was at the U19 European Championships. However, Calciomercato.com report that Roberto Mancini is monitoring his progress and could try call him up for the Italian national team, given he was born in Milano.

Iordanescu spoke to Digi Sport about the possibility of calling up the Milan Primavera captain Coubis and he seemed to admit that there is a chance he is not able to do so, perhaps because he might choose Italy.

“There is the risk of losing him, he grew up elsewhere and has a different mentality. I put him on my shortlist, in November we were close to having him accepted but now it’s time to put things in order, we have priorities like taking care of those players who form the nucleus of the national team,” he said (via SempreMilan.it).

“I don’t think it’s right to hurriedly launch someone just for the risk of losing them. Such things have been done, but as long as I am here I will not have such thoughts. I don’t want to deceive anyone.”

    1. Eh, we have 3 RBs ahead of him at the moment, one being the club captain (Calabria), another on a 3m per year contract who won’t be bought by anyone else (Florenzi), and another one that’s playing better than the first two mentioned (Kalulu). So yeah, Coubis isn’t going to get close to playing time for another couple of seasons. More likely loan to a Serie B side as a starter, and if he proves himself there another loan to a Serie A side for Serie A minutes. Then we’ll see.

    2. What are you talking about? Pioli called Coubis a couple of times in the friendly and also include him in UCL squad.

The kid is still very young and the first team already have 4 RB (Calabria, Florenzi, Kalulu, Dest). It best Coubis stick with Primavera and then loan to other clubs so he can get more experiences before promoted to the first team.

We can’t treated young players with unnecessary pressure. Just let them grown naturally.

  1. Finally an article about the Primavera player with the most potential. Lazetic ain’t it, Alesi is better but still needs physique.

    1. Lazetic played well in Primavera and in recent friendly against Liverpool. He’s still 18 years old but his height almost 2 meter.

      1. Lazetic is sloooooow. He’s Slowbega’s brother it seems😂😂😂. I don’t count friendlies to judge players except on fitness. From the Primavera games I’ve seen him play, he’s not exactly dominant. Lacks pace and strength but that’s probabtdue to his game vs the others. But if you’re a talent above the other then this wouldn’t be an issue
