Romano: Gabbia open to return – Milan ‘advancing in talks’ with Villarreal

AC Milan are in talks with Villarreal to try and terminate Matteo Gabbia’s loan spell a few months early, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

Milan have found themselves in a crisis at the centre-back position with Fikayo Tomori the only fit senior option at the moment. Simon Kjaer has a muscle issue but should return soon, but Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw and Marco Pellegrino are out until 2024.

The situation was so dire on Saturday that Stefano Pioli decided to shift Theo Hernandez infield from left-back to the centre of defence alongside Tomori during the 3-1 victory over Frosinone at San Siro, something that could be repeated against Atalanta this weekend.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Milan are advancing in talks to bring Gabbia back to the club in January from Villarreal, where he is meant to be on a season-long loan deal that doesn’t have an option to buy.

Gabbia is ‘open to returning to AC Milan’ as per the journalist. The plan would be to bring Gabbia back help the club and then to ‘invest the main part of the budget’ on Juan Miranda and more signings.
