Sabtini believes Massara will consider Luis Enrique if Milan have to replace Pioli

By Oliver Fisher -

Walter Sabatini believes that Ricky Massara will make an approach to hire Luis Enrique as AC Milan’s new manager if Stefano Pioli leaves.

Sabatini last worked as a director at Salernitana and he knows Massara well given that the pair were together for a year at Roma in 2016-17 before they both left to join Inter after Suning completed their takeover of the club.

The 67-year-old has given an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport during which he did not rule out the possibility of seeing Luis Enrique become the next head coach of the Rossoneri, with Sabatini having worked with the Spaniard at Roma in 2011-12. He began by speaking about Napoli.

“There is fury in this Napoli, they put it on the field in every game: have you seen how the players compete for second balls? When the gaps are so big, it is obvious that there is also some responsibility on the part of the rivals,” he said.

“In fact, the others never even started the race. But the gap, not necessarily so ample, would have been the same. Napoli are a work of art: Spalletti has put his own into it, but he has also found real players to coach. Giuntoli has done an extraordinary job, also from an asset point of view.”

He then moved on to talking about Luis Enrique, who won two LaLiga titles with Barcelona as well as three Copa del Rey, a Supercopa, the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

He most recently managed Spain and was runner-up in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League, but left his job after losing in the World Cup quarter-finals to Morocco.

“I’d like to see Luis Enrique in Italy again, he’s grown up, now he is one of the greats. Assuming that the replacement of Pioli becomes a topic, it is possible that Massara will give it a little thought. On the contrary: the way he knows him, he cannot fail to have a think about him.”
