CM: Saelemaekers is Milan’s surprise protagonist in Europe – how his future has changed

By Oliver Fisher -

A quick scan down the list of top scorers in the Champions League finds names like Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland, but one name not many expected to be there is Alexis Saelemaekers.

Calciomercato.com writes how Saelemaekers is the ‘surprise character’ for Milan in the Champions League at the moment as he followed up the goal against Red Bull Salzburg with one against Dinamo Zagreb last night to move onto two in two.

It was a perfectly placed header under the crossbar from a Rafael Leao cross and then a celebration under the Curva for the Belgian, who is enjoying a new lease of life in the most competitive club competition in the world.

It is actually the first time since the 2010-11 that Milan have had a player score in the first two days of the Champions League group stages, and that was a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The future of Saelemaekers seems certain to be in red and black as Milan have always shown him confidence, as seen by renewing his contract until 2026. Until a few weeks ago he was considered an integral part of the project but not a non-transferable player, especially in the face of interesting offers, but what arrived were only expressions of interest from German clubs.

Now Saelemaekers is focused on getting his permanent starting spot back from Junior Messias, and he is certainly going about it in the right way.
