Mayor Sala responds to stadium rumours with document but claims council have ‘much more to think about’

By Oliver Fisher -

The Mayor of Milan Beppe Sala has produced an emphatic but also confusing response to the reports regarding the new stadium this morning.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) reported this morning the project for the new stadium at San Siro has stalled again and now Milan and Inter are looking around at potential new locations without as much bureaucracy involved.

The most likely area if they did decide to move away is the Sesto San Giovanni area where the Falck steel works stood. The Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri are willing to accept other compromises because they wish to remain, but will not agree to new expenses without guarantees.

Sala decided to respond to the article in La Gazzetta dello Sport via his Instagram page and stressed that a document signed shows the clubs are still commented, then suggested that there are other priorities that the council must address first.

“San Siro, summing up. As you can see from the image, the teams confirmed to me a week ago that they are preparing the dossier for public debate. A week ago, not six months ago. And from the reception of this letter nothing more happens,” he said.

“Today the Gazzetta dello Sport comes out with this scoop on the intention of Inter and Milan to build the new stadium elsewhere. One of two things. Either the Gazzetta is just looking for the ‘headline’, or the teams tell me one thing (or rather they write it) and give others a different version. Having an official document in my hands, I want to think more about the first hypothesis.

“In any case, however, I would like to tell everyone that in this difficult historical moment the Municipal Administration also has much more to think about.”
