MN: Salary, clause, duration and commissions – the full situation regarding Leao’s renewal

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will meet with Rafael Leao’s entourage in the next few days and an update on the situation has arrived ahead of the summit.

MilanNews report that Ted Dimvula – the winger’s lawyer-agent – is expected in Milan in the next few days while his father Antonio Leao is already in Milan and will attend Milan-Roma on Sunday evening.

The new meeting between the parties will see the issues of salary, termination clause, contract duration, commissions and the Sporting CP fine tackled.

Starting with the salary, Milan will go beyond what is the internal salary system by recognising him as the strongest player in the squad. Other players and Pioli have made it known publicly that they believe Leao is a decisive player and therefore everyone is rooting for his renewal.

Milan’s offer is around €7-7.5m including bonuses, an amount that not only shows how much they value Leao but also how the improvement in the club’s accounts is allowing Maldini and Massara to have more flexibility financially.

Milan would like to maintain the current €150m release clause that can only be activated by foreign clubs and in the first fortnight of July. There could be a request for this to be reduced and there seems to be room for discussion, but Milan would not sell for less than €100m.

There are two hypotheses regarding the duration of the renewal. The first is a three-year extension until 30 June 2027, which is the one Milan are pushing for the most. The second option would be an extension until 30 June 2025.

The latter suggests that it would simply buy Milan time for a sale and while it cannot be ruled out, it is also not certain that a renewal would see Leao stay for many years to come either, and Milan want to give themselves as much leverage as possible given the interest from other clubs.

Finally, Jorge Mendes – now a special adviser to father Antonio Leao – has never completely left the scene even though the power of attorney is legally held by Ted Dimvula.

  1. Never written amount for agents Commission. Milan will pay a lot to Lille after Leao leaves for some fee. Leao is good school for Ac management. It is better to have good squad of players than 1 excellent player. Milan is in need of good Right Winger, Striker, and new Left winger. Leao should be sold untill 2025, and in that time to cover Those 3 positions. Luckly Leao status are not out from space and they are reachable.

  2. A renewal to 2025 means that already in 6 months he’ll have two years left, meaning that 2023 we’ll essentially be in the same situation we were last summer, and that in January 2024 we’ll be in exactly the same situation we’re in now. So if this is the case it means (or should mean) a sale THIS summer to achieve max value, or else in one year we’ll be scrambling to renew him again but at what cost after having already agreed a 7.7m contract? A renewal to 2027 will probably mean we’ll have Leao for two more seasons, or at least definitely one more. What is certain is that he’s destined to leave. The question is when.
