The meeting that took place yesterday between Rafael Leao’s lawyer Ted Dimvula and the AC Milan management did not produce great progress but instead highlighted how difficult a renewal will be.
Calciomercato.com report that the summit at Casa Milan served to reiterate that the Portuguese winger’s lawyer does not want to continue the negotiations alongside Jorge Mendes, who was the man that Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara were hoping to speak with first and foremost due to having a good relationship with the agent.

The confusion generated by the double power of attorney signed by Leao constitutes one of the many problems in negotiation. Another is that Milan technically cannot pay the fine that Leao owed Sporting CP, but they can and they want to help him by guaranteeing him a much higher salary than his current one.
They want to pay Leao to reflect his status as a top player within the league, but also the club prefer doing it this way because the leadership of the Rossoneri believe they have no connection with the Sporting CP saga.
A €6m net per season offer will not be enough though, because Leao and his entourage want at least €8m in order to extend. There is also the issue of the release clause which the French lawyer wants to shift down from the current €150m.
New meetings will be needed as Leao’s will to remain at the club is not enough at the moment, and of course we must wait to see if Mendes has had his last say.

It’s exactly like the Kessie negotiations so far. The numbers demanded keep going up, it’s likely they have an agreement behind the scenes with a Barca or EPL club for a huge agent commission.

Yeah, sounds like this renewal is not going anywhere. Typical kessie move. Not only 1 extra mil, 8 mil, but lower clause than 150 mil. Sell him in the winter after qualifying for ko stages of chl, and get a proper replacement. It sucks because he is the best player that we have but no player is above our beloved milan.
It’s better we sell him at a very good price end of the season while our scout team look for a better replacement I’m sure we can get good money than we find a good cheap young left wing. We can also go for Noa Lang

You cannot sell unless the player agrees to the transfer, or resign unless the player agrees to the terms. Guess what, it is not in Leao’s best interest to do either. He will run down his contract to then be able to sign with whoever he wants so that he can expect a huge sign-on bonus since there will be no transfer fee. There goes the problem of the Lille/Sporting issue and he gets more than Milan could ever afford.

Thats true. There are other options too. Like bench his ass if we can get a proper replacement in the winter. Then he’ll sign with another club in the summer and we pocket the money. Its 1 ugly move but some players deserve that.

BUT! If he chooses that option, he will have to “get by” with “mere” 1.8M€/year for the next ~18 months. Is he willing to “suffer” to wait that long to get his millions?

They are establishing a worrying precedent… Rising players with renewals coming up will want higher than normal salaries as well, like Bennacer, for example. And then what? Milan start caping off which will create a division within the ranks.
Milan should just cash out on Leao and improve the club.

So many people think this is all just so simple. It’s never simple and this Leao situation is even MORE COMPLICATED than normal w/ the Sporting fee issue and the changing of agents, etc.
Ideally we renew him very soon (EXTREMELY UNLIKELY).
Or we find a club to sell him to and make a huge profit and use that money to get someone like Gakpo or another offensive talent.
At the end of the day though, is it really the worst thing in the world if his entourage keep asking for more and more and more and too much and we can’t come to an agreement (and we can’t sell him to another club) that we have Rafa Leao on our team for remainder of this season and all of next season for the bargain price of 1.8M per year and he helps us win one or two MORE Scudetto?
I don’t think it’s a terrible situation that we have him on our team for this season and next season at a cheap price. Leao should WANT to stay with our team and should be willing to accept 6.5M or 7M at most (ESPECIALLY if we are willing to help him w/ the Sporting fee which we have zero obligation to do). He should feel some loyalty to Pioli and Ricky and Paolo who helped him mature. He should want to stay with Theo — having someone like Theo on the same left side with him is one of the reasons he has been able to be so productive. They work well together. If he is too greedy and stubborn, he risks making his own game personally change for the worse if he’s not in as good a situation. Many players go to Premier League and then don’t get the playing time and don’t mix well with teammates or coaches. I think he is making a big mistake if he doesn’t tell his agents to be more reasonable and come to an agreement like Theo did.
Maldini pls sell. Do not hesitate like Donna Kessie etc. Your pay master will be happy with a $60-100M profit. Call for an open tender now. Lets see who makes the highest offer for 2021 Best player.
