San Donato mayor on Milan’s stadium project: “An opportunity we cannot miss”

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan have decided to focus on San Donato for their new stadium and despite the desperate attempts of Milan mayor Beppe Sala, they have no intention of changing their mind.

The Rossoneri recently presented the project to the city council and thus also announced it to the public. It’s an ambitious project, with a 70k stadium and various other facilities in the San Francesco area.

Speaking to Sky Italia, as cited by Felice Raimondo, the San Donato mayor Francesco Squeri shared his thoughts on Milan’s project. He stated that it’s an opportunity that San Donato cannot miss out on.

“Milan has presented the variant proposal [to the Sportlifecity project]. Now a path of study and in-depth analysis begins for us to understand what the positive and negative impacts are. Then we will go to the city council to see whether this variant will be accepted or not. Two or three months will be needed for all this.

“After the vote in the city council, a program agreement will be opened with all the bodies involved such as the Lombardy Region, Metropolitan City, Milan council, Autostrade per l’Italia, Ferrovie dello Stadio and Parco Sud Agricolo. It will take a year and a half (spring of 2025, editor’s note).

“We are committed to ensuring that there are great benefits for the city. With this project, San Donato would return to being an attractive city. There would also be an improvement in rail mobility. The station will finally become a real station. The stadium is an opportunity that we cannot miss,” he stated.

Milan mayor Beppe Sala and his attempts to convince the two clubs have seemingly backfired, as the San Donato politicians now can understand the importance of the two clubs (and in this case, AC Milan).

There is still a long way to go, however, and even though the Rossoneri have made great progress already, we must be patient.
