AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni is happy with the impact that Sergio Conceicao has made, but stressed that the target is a top four finish.
Back on December 30 there was chaos at Milan as Paulo Fonseca was sacked after a draw with Roma and quickly replaced by Conceicao. Just a few days later on Monday 6 January, the Rossoneri won the Supercoppa Italiana to lift the first trophy of the Gerry Cardinale era.
It meant Conceição is the Milan coach to have taken the least amount of games (two) to win a trophy in club history, counting all competitions since 1929-20. The record was previously held by Vincenzo Montella (won the Supercoppa in December 2016 after 18 games).
A high has emerged almost out of nowhere, but Conceicao is aware that everything could come crashing back down to earth without a win against Cagliari tomorrow night, given the mission to catch up on the Champions League places.
Scaroni spoke to reporters who gathered outside the Lega Serie A assembly and he answered questions about the change in head coach, with his comments relayed by TMW.
Did you expect such a strong start?
“I have to say that I expected it a little because he has that character, but it seems to me that everything is going in a good direction. Let’s hope it continues.”
Is the goal now to get improve in Serie A?
“We have many. We want to stay in the Champions League of course and also in the league we must do better for sure, there is no doubt. I always have one goal: to be in the Champions League next year.”
“We have many. We want to stay in the Champions League of course and also in the league we must do better for sure, there is no doubt. I always have one goal: to be in the Champions League next year.”
Because who cares about winning more titles right ? 19 scudetti and 7 coppa dei campioni will always be many even in 100 years right ?
It’s like this man loves to remind us that he is a loser with little ambition.
Dude, relax. I’m not a fan of Scaroni, but his statement does not say that he doesn’t want to win titles. That’s your extrapolation. I think what is ultimately implied, and poorly expressed by Scaroni, is that the minimum goal is to participate in the CL. And for a club like Milan, this would be true regardless of ownership/managers.
Sometimes ppl only hear what they want to hear. There’s a healthy chunk of this community that will never accept redbird/management. I really wish this site was up at the beginning of the banter era. Berlusconi literally ran this club like Everton during the final ten years
To be fair if anything I could probably mention 10-20 people in this community who has been posting for at least 10 years either on Goal or Rossoneri blog and people wasn’t happy back then either.
I wouldn’t say is not that he doesn’t want to win title but clearly that’s not the main aim. His main aim as he’s said many times is top 4 and titles are a sub objective. That’s why fans aren’t happy with the mentality. It doesn’t fit the history of the club, even if we do get why from a financial pov , this shouldn’t be the mantra from the people from the top
Would a delusional scudetto target make the fans happy? Everyone knows there is zero chance of Milan winning the scudetto this year. He would be locked up in a hospital if he started ranting about scudetto goals this season.
The problem is it’s not that the first time he mentions that his main goal is finishing at least fourth, not to mention that comment on how “he’ll pack Leao’s bags himself”. I think this man shouldn’t be allowed to speak to the media.
