Scaroni reassures Sala over stadium plans and discusses Norman Foster’s Sesto design

By Oliver Fisher -

Yet another war of words has erupted in the media between the various parties involved in the potential construction of a new stadium in Milan, and president Paolo Scaroni has spoken again.

It has been an interesting few days on the new stadium front as the Mayor of Sesto San Giovanni continues to flirt with the idea of building a new home for Milan (and possibly Inter too) in that area, while the Milan Mayor Beppe Sala decided to respond yesterday by claiming the Council have done their part and are waiting for the clubs.

Scaroni responded to Sala during an interview with Il Corriere della Sera and also spoke about the idea that the Rossoneri are now moving away from the idea of constructing a new shared stadium with Inter in favour of their own stadium in Sesto San Giovanni.

“We have been pursuing the San Siro project for years, it has always been our first choice. We have pursued it with stubbornness, also investing a lot of money, aware that a project of this size and in that area of the city requires a certain authorisation process that has particular times and methods, some of which we did not actually imagine or thought could be overcome, but it is clear that if there are rules they must follow,” he said (via Calciomercato.com).

“No surprise from this point of view. We and Inter are continuing with that project and our team met the coordinator of the public debate just yesterday. We hired a consulting company to help us prepare for it. We hope to conclude the public debate, then there will be appeals to the TAR. If all goes well by the end of the year we could have concluded this phase.”

Scaroni was also asked about the idea of the alternative site represented by the Falck area of Sesto San Giovanni and the different design put forward by British architect Norman Foster.

“It is part of the master plan made by Norman Foster who had imagined a small Wembley in that area. But we’ll see, we haven’t decided yet. We are linked to Populous, then we have a new shareholder, Cardinale, who is a super stadium expert and will therefore have his say,” he said.
