Journalist believes results are ‘not enough’ as Milan have been ‘aesthetically very poor’

By Oliver Fisher -

Journalist Luca Serafini believes that the new tactical approach from Stefano Pioli is ‘not enough’ because the team are suffering in terms of their overall play.

Milan managed to put an end to a seven-game winless run with the victory over Torino at San Siro earlier in the month and then followed that up with a win against Spurs by the same margin in the Champions League, before inflicting a first defeat of 2023 on Monza.

However, the performances have not given the impression that Milan are out of their tunnel and instead there has been scrutiny about what has seemingly been a defence-first approach which is opposite to what Pioli has been trying to do since he took charge.

Serafini spoke during his weekly column for MilanNews and admitted that the alterations may have stopped the bleeding that was occurring in January, but it is not producing an aesthetically pleasing style of football.

“The new formation has adjusted matters a bit, fixed something: solidity, compactness, in short, greater protection, with the beautiful discovery of Thiaw. All this is not enough, however,” he said.

“Apart from the night of the Champions League, the victories over Torino and Monza were aesthetically very poor, in the first half with the Granata and in the second half in Brianza, although – as Pioli recalls – they were two fit and rather difficult opponents.

“The fact is that there was a lot of suffering, although 3 victories and as many clean sheets restored confidence and buried that brutal crisis in January. Beyond the value of the Torino and Monza results, especially in the last match it is Milan that made too many mistakes, technically, managing to show little and bad build-up play and finish even worse.

“It’s true that the team came together and finally reacted, showing character and will, but in short, in these three years we’ve gotten used to important performances in terms of play. Above all, we had experienced first-hand growth in general levels. Fear still crawls, waiting to fully recover the optimal condition.”

  1. Serafini needs to understand that expecting the team to keeps playing beautiful and offensive while win with big scores are not realistic.

There are times where players in bad form. But if the team still win while in bad forms then that’s good, especially in the league when three points are very important no matter how ugly or beautiful you play.
