Serie A clubs to sign official document opposing abolition of Growth Decree

By Oliver Fisher -

The uncertainty about the future of the Growth Decree is causing a lot of unease among Serie A clubs, who have in turn moved to try and block its potential abolition.

As TMW reports, the current plan – confirmed today by the president of Lega Serie A, Lorenzo Casini – still provides for the elimination of tax benefits, a topic also discussed today in the assembly with the unanimous intention of the clubs of the league to push against its removal.

If there is no change, the abolition will concern all future contracts, without affecting previous benefits. One issue, however, concerns contract renewals: all those signed after the entry into force of the budget law would be considered new contracts.

At the moment, pessimism is spreading but hope is not lost that the plans can be overturned. The Growth Decree however was not originally designed for football and it would seem strange, on a political level, to remove the tax regime for everyone except footballers.

Casini explained: “It was decided to prepare a synthetic document which shows the damage of this abolition and how removing it could disadvantage young people. We will send it with a collaborative spirit, not one of conflict.”

Serie A as a league will produce this document in the next few days and according to the calculations of the leaders of Italian football, abolishing the decree would disadvantage young Italian players, who many believe to be harmed by these measures.

Why is that? The theory is that the money saved on the salaries of players coming from abroad was reinvested by the clubs to strengthen their youth sector. Will the government be convinced? That remains to be seen.
