Sky: Short-term renewal hypothesis emerges in Leao talks – the situation

By Oliver Fisher -

A new idea has emerged in the talks over Rafael Leao’s renewal, namely a short-term deal to buy the AC Milan management a bit more time.

According to what was reported by Manuele Baiocchini on Sky (via MilanNews), Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are thinking of an alternative solution for the renewal of Leao as talks continue with his entourage.

The idea would be to offer the player a short-term renewal – for example a deal until 2025 – in order to postpone the more pressing problem of a long-term contract extension.

This would serve in gaining time to resolve some important issues, such as that of the fine to be paid to Sporting CP, and it would also mean that the player does not have to leave the club in the summer.

If Milan were forced into a sale this summer it would potentially be against the wishes of both parties as the player seems to want to stay while the club would get a lower price than his real value due to the imminent deadline.

  1. Doesn’t make sense, then he walks away for free in 2025.. we keep him like a a man who doesn’t want to lose his wife when the wife is already done with him.. let him go if he wants. He plays terrible anyway

  2. The logic doesn’t check out. If he extends to 2025, what time does it buy? Leao plays another season and in 2024 will again be one year away from end of contract and therefore decreased in value. So you’d still have to sell this summer to get “max value”. The only way this “short term” theory works is an extension to 2026 at a minimum.

    1. why do you people here think 1 year left in contract magically means no one will pay money for the player?

Go f*cking look up transfers recently, if the player is worth it there’ll be plenty of suitors who wants to pay.

  3. This is situation is exposing the lack of experience with contract renewal by Maldini and Massara.

Leap renewal should been completed after the scudetto last year.

I respect maldini as a former player and legend of Milan but I don’t believe he is good enough to handle this role.

We need someone with experience. We shouldn’t have lost Donnaruma. kessie, Romagnoli and Calhanglu for free. These are top quality players who are worth over 150m combined.

  4. Well it means he can be sold in summer of 2023 for bigger price or in winter 2024. Or Milan can give him bigger contract in 2024 or sell him next year.

  5. I guess the logic behind this idea is to promise him that he’ll be sold next summer, and it will free his mind so he could return to his best in order to increase the price.
Emmm…not bad I would say. It’s better than to have him all distracted now and will allow us to make more money in one year.

  6. This means no club is willing to pay what Leao and his agent are asking.
There was a story yesterday that even though his agent has offered Leao to almost all the big clubs in Europe none of them has a concrete interest in Leao.
No one signs a 1 year extension when he has around 20 mil in debt he gotta pay to another club.
Also it would not benefit Milan at all unless he is signing for at least 2 more years, because starting in September will be in the same position all over again.
And the people that believe that he will resign for an extra year and still be sold this summer are out of their minds.
Outside of Chelsea, reportedly, no club has come forward for Leao, and Chelsea don’t want him anymore

  7. If they don’t renew him or at least get 90m manegment has to go …. There is no money in serie A but we are only top 7 club that got worst over the past 3 transfer windows and made 0€ on player sales in that time, tell me a club in seria a that did that and some how Maldini and Massara are geniuses. We have an amazing scouting staff all of their targets became at least 60+m players but we go chasing for freaking Renato Sancez and Origi and also renew fuking Mesisas oh don’t forget that backup GK ….
