Sky: Defensive record and home form among key issues for Milan to address

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan surrendered a lead late on against Bologna in Saturday night’s 2-2 draw, and it continued a theme of dropped points at home.

During today’s edition of Il Calcio è Servito on Sky, Peppe Di Stefano (via MilanNews) reported that Milan’s home form is an issue that Stefano Pioli and his staff must resolve, because ‘evidently there is something wrong there too’.

Milan have lost four times and drawn twice at San Siro so far this season, which has hindered them in their pursuit of the Scudetto, the Coppa Italia and qualification for the Champions League knockout stages.

Milan must find a remedy for this problem to get back to scoring points within friendly confines, because it is an element of things that is letting them down.

The games in question are the 0-0 draw against Newcastle United and the 3-1 defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, the 1-0 losses to Juventus and Udinese in the league, the 2-2 draw with Bologna on Saturday and the 2-1 Coppa Italia defeat to Atalanta.

Meanwhile, Di Stefano also spoke about the defensive issues that Milan have had as they conceded another two goals in their last game.

PIoli was very angry after that match not so much because of how his team had played, but for the carelessness at the end which ultimately cost two points.

  1. The defence is lacking not because of just personnel, but tactically there isn’t an adjustment that has worked in stopping teams from exploiting the weaknesses. This is a Pioli and personnel issue and I think using a double pivot is needed now to stop the leakage.

    1. The perplexing strategy of employing man-to-man marking in the final third, coupled with our whole midfield’s occasional ventures into the opposition’s final third creates an absurd defensive setup. Even a defensive legend like Maldini would find it challenging to navigate within such a structure.
