Sky journalist offers update on Pioli’s team selection: “Two certainties, two doubts”

By Ben Dixon -

Ahead of AC Milan’s Europa League round of 16 clash against Slavia Praha on Thursday, a journalist has given an insight into how Pioli may lineup his side for the important clash, with changes expected from the game against Lazio.

With Inter 16 points clear in Serie A, the chances of a comeback in the league are marginal if they still exist. As a result, the demand for success in Europe, perhaps especially as it is not the Champions League, will be raised.

There is much on the line for Stefano Pioli, as it has been reported that his job could be decided by the club’s performance in Europe. As a result, there is extra pressure on him to ensure he picks the right team to go as far as possible.

Whilst a lot of the negatives regarding this season can be linked back to the club’s injury crisis, there can also be complaints about Pioli’s squad management, particularly when rotating his sides, and this will be looked at again, with the squad having a, respectfully, easier fixture this weekend.

Di Stefano spoke to Sky Sports about the game, the condition of Milan, and the potential lineup, and his words have been relayed by Radio Rossonera.

“Today’s training confirmed the good news we had already announced: Stefano Pioli has all the players available except Pobega. We will see a Milan in the best psycho-physical condition and with the best men.

“Who will play? Definitely Leao, who will not be there on Sunday against Empoli due to disqualification. Pulisic will probably play on the right with, perhaps, Olivier Giroud in the centre once again. Luka Jovic, on the other hand, could play on Sunday against Empoli to give the almost 38-year-old Frenchman a break,” he said.

“In the middle of the field Adli again. At his side, in my opinion, there will be a battle between Bennacer and Reijnders, with Loftus-Cheek more advanced. In defence, Malick Thiaw will be back again from the start with Matteo Gabbia. On the left will be Theo Hernandez and on the right Florenzi-Calabria ballot. Remember that Florenzi will also be disqualified on Sunday against Empoli.”
