AC Milan have decided to put the negotiations for Emerson Royal on hold because another defender is likely to arrive instead, according to reports.
According to Sky (via Reddit), Milan have ‘frozen’ negotiations for Emerson to advance talks for Strahinja Pavlović, which draws an obvious question mark regarding the plans for the defence given they play different positions.
The broadcaster add that Paulo Fonseca has been consistently testing Pierre Kalulu as a right-back during the first few days of training, and potentially sees him as being capable to do a job on the flank.
Thus, the investment could be diverted towards Pavlović, the Red Bull Salzburg defender who is on vacation after Serbia were knocked out of the European Championship in the group stage.
Meanwhile, Simone Cristao of Radio Rossonera is also reporting that the Serbian is more likely to arrive than the Brazilian, which as a consequence means that Kalulu is heading for a ‘dual role’ again.
When Kalulu arrived from Lyon it was known that he could play both as a centre-back and as a full-back. He has been a back-up for large parts of his time with the Rossoneri, but was a bedrock of the Scudetto win starting alongside Fikayo Tomori.
Perhaps they actually decided to see what Emerson is actually as a player.
Pavlovic is the beast- tall, strong like rock, can run and pass the ball to the oponents half very easely. AC will be lucky to get him but I’m not sure they have the money.
20M for pavlo is a much better deal than 20M for Royal. His last name isn’t even Royal, he made that up. It’s de Souza

I’ve always liked the look of Kalulu at RB. Better pace and crossing than Calabria.

I would love to see Kalulu in the defensive midfield role. I think hes suited very well for that. Like a Viera or Desailly.

True but when he had a defined role as CB is was quite good and 21.

I believe he’s got quite a bit of growing to do if he has a defined role.
He also seems unusually clever to me. My memory of him was his knack for attacking the ball from the CB position and winning it far up the pitch. It looked to me like a key reason he and Tomorri did so well
So I’ll take the hope he can apply that to his crossing and quickly improve. Cuz, you are right in that we need improvement there.

Sliding Theo up and the others across gives 3 CB while in game. Seems like a potentially useful tactical ploy. Almost like getting to sub for “free” to change the game at some point.

We have a RB. One of the best 1v1 RBs in the league who also has a decent assist and goals record for a player who had to either provide defensive cover for Theo or play as an inverted full back/DM.

We have a top talent in Kalulu, as Fonseca loves young players we will get to see more of the Futuro guys in the rotation as well. Maybe my Conceicao disappointment will finally leave. I still want to see his son in a Milan shirt though. Excellent player.
If Fonseca prioritized Pavlovic over Emerson, he deserves our full support. The management’s incompetence is evident, and we’re still feeling the impact of missing out on Boban’s expertise.
