Sky journalist: Why Pioli was ‘angry’ after Slavia win and expected changes vs. Empoli

Sky journalist Peppe Di Stefano believes that Stefano Pioli will make changes for Sunday’s game against Empoli after a night against Slavia Praha that produced more question marks than answers.

Speaking directly from Milanello the day after Milan’s victory at San Siro last night, journalist Di Stefano wanted to comment on the mood emitting from the group after the game and what might change in view of Sunday. MilanNews relayed his thoughts.

“Too much suffering last night… yes Milan won by scoring four goals as Roma also did, but the opponents were of lower quality and above all they were down to 10 men for almost the entire match,” he began.

“Milan had regrets and defensive distractions, despite a good approach in the first half. They took the lead, then errors happened and it was 1-1. In the second half they had a 3-1 lead and then conceded another goal due to another error, in the end you managed to extend the lead thanks to the play from Leao, but it’s not enough, yesterday there wasn’t an environment of total happiness.

“This match leaves the Rossoneri with a mystery, because they are a team that plays well and entertains like against Atalanta and then they play colourless matches like yesterday or against Monza.”

Di Stefano went on to talk about how the head coach Stefano Pioli feels following the game, one in which his side showed promise in glimpses but again fell victim to some lapses in concentration.

The journalist also talked about how the Rossoneri are likely to line up on Sunday against Empoli, a game that will be played again at home but this time at 14:00 CET.

“Stefano Pioli was angry because he expected something more from his players. There was Leao, who trained today but who will not be there against Empoli because he is disqualified, as well as Florenzi. In fact the Portuguese will be replaced by Okafor or Chukwueze: if the Nigerian played, Pulisic would go to the left, while Okafor would remain on the left.

“There are still some doubts, in attack there will be a battle between Jovic and Giroud, in midfield Bennacer returns with one of Adli or Reijnders while in defence it will be Tomori or Thiaw in place of Kjaer, tomorrow there will also be no pre-match conference at Milanello.”

Milan now have a double mission in the last three months of the season: to try and snatch second place from Juventus in the league and to go as far as possible in the Europa League.
