Sky: Pioli set for another season at Milan after positive upturn in form

By Euan Burns -

Stefano Pioli could be set for another season as the AC Milan coach despite constant speculation suggesting that he will be replaced in the summer.

According to a report from Sky Sport Italia, the Italian coach has produced enough positive form in the second half of the season to warrant the final year of his contract.

With just one year to run on his deal, Milan’s failure to launch a Serie A title challenge had led many to think that Pioli would not get a new contract and would be replaced.

Milan have settled into a positive run of form recently with players returning from injury and they have a firm grip on second in the Serie A table, having won the last four league games.

Remaining in the Europa League has also been a factor in the confidence in Pioli, and the hierarchy at the club now think that the conditions are there for him to continue as coach for the foreseeable future.

A very relevant factor is that there is no obvious and affordable coach that Milan can get this summer who will be a clear upgrade on Pioli, and with a young and talented squad, there would be no harm in leaving Pioli in his post.

  1. The problem with Pioli will always be the same. There is no patterns of play in our offense. We rely on individual briliance way to often. We saw it in the games against Udinese, verona and sassoulo at home. He has been there for 4 years and there is no progress in that front and it never will

      1. You talk about about goals and I mention the overall play. It is not about breaking down low blocking teams it is the lack of ideas in our play in those games.

    1. We play a less quicker, less wide version of Motta’s. By wide I mean, Motta’s wingers stay put to create space in the middle. And we build up play through the pivots by breaking lines with regular passing to the forwards and back, making incisive passes in the middle or else ball moves to the wing. That’s literally how we play. No pattern of play is when we had Pippo Inzaghi as coach that’s zero pattern play

  2. Decision will come after Roma clash in Europe League and Derby.

If we loose both games, I am afraid board won’t back Pioli up.

If we go to Dublin and beat parasite Inter in derby, I am more than happy to keep Pioli.

  3. They need to decide soon because it looks like De Zerbi is off to Bayern Munich. With Pioli at the helm it will be another season playing second fiddle to Inter.

    1. Without Pioli at the helm it will likely be another season playing second fiddle to Inter. They’re ahead in their cycle and benefitting from stability. Though they might slip up or decide they need to do something about their crazy debts.

I certainly don’t think you can confidently say there’s a coach out there who could definitely make us competitive with the current Inter overnight.

And being honest, if Bayern want de Zerbi, then it makes no difference what Milan choose to do – he’ll go there instead. I suspect he’d choose to stay at Brighton and await another Premier League club if not.

      1. “They’re ahead in their cycle and benefitting from stability.”

You do realize that Simone Inzaghi is the 2nd coach at inter since Pioli has been at Milan?
Also, since Conte quit almost 3 years ago, there are only 6 players left from his time, the others are all new players. Lautaro, Barella, Bastoni, De Vrij, Darmian & Alexis Sanches. Does that says stability?
Meantime, Simone Inzaghi 6 trophies at inter in 3 years( 2 trophies per year).
Pioli 1 trophy in 5 years.

        1. I’d add that Sanchez was bought, left and bought back again. If Maldini or Moncada did that, we won’t hear the end of it.

          1. Not that much different than a player being sold with a buy back clause and then having that buy back be activated. Happens often. There is no drama here. Nice try though.

  4. On one hand it would seem fair and wise to keep him as he has a good bond with the players and we should have a more settled team next season.
Give him a proper DM and a Proper striker and judge him based on having a complete squad.

On the other hand we have lacked a real game plan, set pieces are poor, injuries have been terrible and he is quite stubborn when it comes to favoring certain players and tactics.

I certainly value stability at the club after so many years of chaos.

I have a feeling our weakness in midfield will be exposed against better sides in the EL and the Derby, so it may come down to that

  5. Yh exactly this management are a joke.Pioli has done an incredible work with scudetto and ucl semi final, but cant take us to the next level.I really hope we get an exiting upciming coach like de zerbi or motta

  6. Whoever expected trophies this season after summer overhaul lives in a fantasy world. It was a season for settling. I was even sceptical we’ll qualify for next season’s CL.

Can’t blame Pioli because of injuries. High intensity football will always cumulate casulties. Just look at Liverpool this season. 14 first team players were out until a month ago. 7 of them are still out. They were forced to play Cup final against Chelsea and EL games with their Primavera kids. But you don’t see fans slay Klopp for it.

I’m all for Pioli staying regardless of EL success. Winning EL against the likes of Liverpool and Bayer was always near impossible.

And we are still only a point below our strongest season.

    1. Can’t blame Pioli for the injuries!?
Is high intensity football the only style of football?
Other clubs have success with less intense football that comes with no casualties.
How often are Inter’s players injured?
So let’s keep Pioli and his high intensity football and let the players be the casualties, because after all the average coach who has won only 1 trophy in his life is more important than the players and their health.
Klopp burned out the players and himself.

    2. Agree with you here, I think we’re doing well overall and I hope Pioli stays. Are there potential upgrades? Possibly. Are there a lot of risks with changing? Absolutely certainly.

    3. “But you don’t see fans slay Klopp for it.”

Yeah, that is because Klopp has 13 titles, including a Champions League (and four final appearances with two different teams, one of which was Dortmund). His managerial career started at the same time as Pioli, but in that time, he’s only managed 3 teams, Pioli has been at 15. The second line of Klopp’s Wikipedia page states, “[h]e is widely regarded as one of the best football managers in the world”, unlike Pioli. I would also be supportive.

    4. Although all this being said, and given that I am not super high on Pioli at this point, it’s difficult to justify a dismissal this summer. If he makes it to the EL final, even more so. I think the chances of him staying for the final year of his contract are quite high. The big decision then be: does the club extend his contract in the summer or take a wait and see approach until January? There are pros and cons. The biggest pro to extending him in the summer is that the matter will be settled and the squad can work in peace, so to speak. In other words, continuity. The con is that if we do the usual blackout for a month and then find ourselves 8-15 points behind first in January, we’ll have to pay him a large sum when (if?) we dismiss him, in addition to having to accept a wasted season.

    1. You mean like the clubs who are constantly changing managers because they assume this is the reason they’re not massively overperforming? Agreed, insanity.

      1. Well the coaches who stay for a long time in the same club generally have big performances.
Pioli has one scudetto in 4 seasons.

          1. Not sure why you want to take Atalanta as an example.
Atalanta has a single title which is coppa italia 1963 (not counting serie B anc C here), for them qualifying to European spots for many seasons in a row and reaching UCL QF is huge.
Unless you think AC Milan should aspire to be more like Atalanta.

  7. This site is pro Pioli and Corrupt Site because pioli is the only coach in acmilan history who never Produced any single plyaer from Primavera.
So Pioli,Furlani and the President should be accoutable for this very reasonable invested team with on acheived target.
Remeber A Conte on fired for the disqualifiicatiob if the UCL.
    Look T Motta without spending.
Pioli devaluated the valuable players suchbas Chekuweza,Musah,Terrachiano,Jovatic, with his dullness, enemity, and wrong system.

  8. Maybe management thought, if we change coach we have to buy players which is more expensive so they have to go with Pioli again. As a matter of fact, we might win serie A but don’t expect too high on UCL champion. But we can only read this article and watch games afterall.
