Sky: Probable XIs for Dortmund vs. Milan – Rossoneri meet a 3-5-2 again

By Oliver Fisher -

The Champions League is back and AC Milan – who drew 0-0 in their first group stage game at San Siro against Newcastle – will face Borussia Dortmund away in the second.

Sky have the team news after today’s final training session at Milanello, and the big news is in midfield where Ismael Bennacer, Rade Krunic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are all unavailable due to injury.

Tijjani Reijnders, Yunus Musah and Tommaso Pobega should former the trio, with Yacine Adli initially starting from the bench after getting starts in each of the last two league games. It remains to be seen who will act as the regista between the Dutchman and the American.

In defence, in front of Mike Maignan, there will be Davide Calabria and Theo Hernandez as the full-backs while in the centre Malick Thiaw returns to partner Fikayo Tomori. Christian Pulisic, Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao will be the front three.

They also give some news on how Dortmund should line-up, with Sule as a starter at centre-back after he only played the last ten minutes in the victory against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.

Sabitzer – who missed the match against Hoffenheim due to injury – should return to midfield with Emre Can, Wolf and Adeyemi also coming in.

Probable Milan XI (4-3-3): Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Musah, Reijnders, Pobega; Pulisic, Giroud, Leao.

Unavailable: Bennacer, Kalulu, Krunic, Caldara, Loftus-Cheek.

Probable Dortmund XI (3-5-2): Kobel; Gannets, Hummels, Schlotterbeck; Ryerson, Sabitzer, Emre Can, Brandt, Wolf; Adeyemi, Malen.

  1. My take on this too. Pobega is hard-headed in fighting and marking. Hence we need him more at the onset of the game than Adli. Adli can come in the second half when I think the game must have been understood by our boys.

  2. fortunately they are both flexable enough that if it makes sense to switch mid game based on where they and pioli see opportunity, they can play it by ear with musah and reijnders.

  3. I want to make a suggestion, I prefer Milan should use another formation instead of that 4-3-3 because Dortmund’s formation will be so hard for Milan to break, because there mid field is choke, so I suggest if we can use 4-5-1 so that I would be a hard fight in the mid field, and since we have capable players that go on counter attack, I think we can have edge over them. Because we must not loss guard oo, we have to learn from our past mistake I mean from Inter Milan game

    1. We already use 4-5-1 at off-ball defending phase. We use 3-4-3 when on-ball build-up. And lastly we use 3-2-5 when at Final Third. And these game-plan simply mentioned as 4-3-3, but we play it very fluid.
