SM: Why Milan’s Champions League adventure could benefit from tight schedule

By Isak Möller -

The derby win was an important confidence boost, but there is no time for AC Milan to breathe. On Tuesday evening, the Rossoneri will face RB Salzburg in the opening clash of the Champions League group stage.

Stefano Pioli’s men did really well in the Derby della Madonnina and played extremely good football at times. The win was certainly justified but now they have to recharge their batteries and shift focus to the Champions League.

As highlighted by our colleagues at SempreMilan.it, the tight schedule Milan have in the first half of the season could paradoxically benefit them. Usually, Serie A starts a little later than the foreign leagues, resulting in a gap in the physical conditions.

For Tuesday’s clash, however, Milan and Salzburg will both arrive in good physical condition. The Rossoneri have already played five games and the pre-season also started earlier, meaning they will be in better condition for the UCL opener than they were last season.

In short, the tight schedule might actually benefit Milan in their Champions League pursuit, hoping to make it out of the group stage this time.
