Sportitalia director Criscitiello insists Conte ‘only has Milan in mind’

By Euan Burns -

Sportitalia journalist Michele Criscitiello believes that Antonio Conte is entirely focused on getting the AC Milan job when Stefano Pioli’s tenure comes to an end.

As explained by Criscitiello (via Mondo Napoli), the Italian coach is being linked with a number of vacant and potentially vacant jobs, one of which is Milan.

Pioli is said to be walking on thin ice this week given they could be out of the Europa League by Friday as AS Roma are 1-0 up in the Europa League quarter-final and the second leg is at the Stadio Olimpico.

That is followed by the Derby della Madonnina in which Inter can win the Serie A title with a victory. Given the stadium will be full of Milan fans, that would be a very embarrassing situation.

As Criscitiello explains, Conte has not had as much contact with Napoli as many people would assume and his salary would be too much for them, especially if they have no European football.

Partly for that reason, Conte is watching Milan closely, presumably thinking that there is a good set of ingredients for success there.

“We have said it many times: Conte and [Aurelio] De Laurentiis have had no contact since January, the coach costs a lot, around €8 million, a sum that Napoli, in the event of not participating in the European cups, could not afford. Conte only has Milan in mind, with whom he already has a pre-agreement, we need to understand Pioli’s position,” Criscitiello said.

    1. Conte would kill it at milan. Ofc after his mojo slows down, and it always does, it’s up to the club to hold it together. Idk like shinter did with not pippo inzaghi

But I’m almost 90% conte would win us something, while with stefano that’s in around 20% but sure we’d get CL with him..

Ia that enough for ac Milan tho? To be content with being regular in CL? Personally, i want more.

      1. Conte would deliver the Scudetto but set Milan back some ways. Especially in Europe. And his philosophy doesn’t seem to coincide with Milan’s in developing players.

Will he want new players to be brought in? Will he be content with ours?

        1. Yeah. Sure. People forget Conte brought juve up. At that time juve didn’t have cash to splash and had to sell to get players. The resurgence of Pirlo. That was Conte. Vidal. Conte. Pogba, while he was still good. Conte. BBC defense. Conte.

He’d be content AF with what Milan has imao

          1. True. Also not to forget this Inter was built on Conte’s foundation as well. I must admit I hated Conte on his time at Juve and Inter (naturally), but logically speaking, he’ll bring us to the next level with the right ingredients.

  1. Bring Conte in, get rid of Pioli.
Pioli makes 4+ mil a season. Conte is at least twice the coach Pioli will ever be. It’s only right to pay him around 8 a year.

      1. So winning in 1 game vs Conte means that he is better than him?
Conte has won at every club he has been except Tottenham.
Pioli has been a loser at every club he has been except for one season at Milan.

  2. Milan need a coach to take us to the next level. A coach that will command the respect of our best players like Theo, Leao and Maignan.

If Milan doesn’t appointment a top coach then these players will look elsewhere to play for a club and a coach who is determined to win trophies and compete in the champions league.

I’ve read before that Cardinale likes Conte and Ibra is a fan of Conte. So if Pioli is replaced it will most likely be Conte who will be appointed as our new coach.

  3. I need to see Conte’s passion! he will demand high energy on the pitch! not this slow sleepy approach that comes with Pioli.

  4. Conte can go to napoli . He is not long term coach, just 1-2 years and he will be leaving. When he arrive , he will revolution squad , after he leave then klub need revolution again ( if the coach replacement not using 352 or 343 system) . Even if pioli out , ACM will find another coach that not asking too much expensive player or can working with many young player
