ClaroSports: A 543% rise in sales – the staggering numbers as Gimenez-mania grips Milan

The signing of Santiago Gimenez has generated a lot of excitement among AC Milan fans, and some staggering numbers have emerged which help quantify it.

Gimenez became Milan’s second signing of the winter transfer window, joining from Feyenoord in a deal widely reported to be worth around €35m, with Alvaro Morata leaving for Galatasaray to free the spot.

Having been linked since the summer transfer window, ‘El Bebote’ arrives after two and a half years at Feyenoord, with whom he scored 65 goals in all competitions. It is likely that he will make his debut tonight against Roma in the Coppa Italia.

According to data from ClaroSports, Gimenez fever seems to have gripped everyone, even beyond Italy. There was a 388% increase in online sales and a 543% rise in personalised shirt sales in the 24 hours after Gimenez signed for Milan.

The USA represented 42% of sales and Mexico 18%, with Italy also having 18% and the Netherlands – where the forward arrived from – having 9%. In addition to that, 92% of printed shirts in that period had Gimenez’s name on.

In the United States more specifically, 33% of the orders were from California and 23% from Texas, two states where there is a sizeable Mexican population. Illinois is third with 7% of the orders.

  1. No use of the data if exact figures are not mentioned. Anyway, it’s good for the international brand, as Mexicans are a big and passionate for football market.

Let’s hope the merits are generated on the base of on-field success rather than merchandise.

    1. Ah yes a man of the math culture 😁. I got blasted for saying the same with Puli’s shirt sales which they also only quoted the percentages.
You are absolutely correct. Unless you have a starting point (absolute value) these numbers can mean anything from going from a sale of 5 shirts to 24 shirts in the Mexican market or multiples of that configuration (approximately).
Some markets currently will naturally have low sakes if we don’t have players representing that market so any signing for those markets will boost % increases in sales astronomically

      1. The good part is, I believe this time their main goal signing him, was for him to…well, score goals. The merch impact is a very nice benefit. I bet Cardinale has already told the directors to look for any other suitable Mexican for the summer mercato.

In Puli/Musah cases I am 100% sure their main objective was to engage with the US market. They just found a gem of a deal in Puli’s case.

  2. When you get good quality, they help promote the image of the club. But, firstly, it all started when we hired Conceicao. Some coaches force the hands of the management. Conceicao, like Guardiola, Conte, has that effect. I also give credit to Ibra, for pulling the strings. So much has changed just within three years. I’m so excited, and, I hope these ones will be our future legends. Forza Milan!!!

  3. These numbers are relative. What isn’t relative though is the brand value when better players arrive and the club actually challenges for trophies that matter …
