Pavlovic Miracle Man

GdS: ‘Super Pavlovic’ is Milan’s ‘miracle man’ with one flaw – a question of characteristics

Without Strahinja Pavlovic, AC Milan could have had a very different night on Tuesday, but he is still flawed. The solution must be found quickly because the Serbian could become crucial.

In a season where Pavlovic has been criticised more than he has been supported, it seems strange to see him named as a miracle man, but Gazzetta dello Sport have deemed his performance on Tuesday deserving of that title.

As Slovan Bratislava countered and Strelec rounded and beat Mike Maignan, an open goal awaited him, and it would have accepted his gift were it not for Pavlovic. The Serb charged back and his outstretched leg stopped the hosts from taking the lead early on.

From that, Milan gained a second lease of life and scored their first of the evening shortly after. Had it not been for ‘Super Pavlovic’, things could and probably would have gone much differently in Slovakia.

Unfortunately, though, he is still flawed, and his position in the team cannot be solidified without a solution being found.

The report from Gazzetta continues, stating that he must not play next to Tomori – an argument supported by the scoreline – instead, partnering with Thiaw or Gabbia is the logical solution, and for a player who has saved the Diavolo twice already this season, perhaps the solution must be acted upon.

  1. I still believe if he works a bit on his tactical awareness, positional skills and in some situations dampens his eagerness a bit he really could become a force to be reckoned with and end up as a top defender. Even with his flaws he is still the transfer I was the most happy about us getting as I had expected that he would have joined an epl team and at a higher cost than we paid for him. Considering that he already has over 40 matches for the Serbian international team i also suspect that he will end up as one of their most capped players ever.

    1. I disagree. Yes, he has all the potential, but so does Thiaw and maybe Gabbia as well. We need someone whose already there, someone who can come and instantly raise the level of our back line.

Our best purchase this summer is Fofana, not the least because he’s already at his prime

      1. Well its ok to disagree and I also expected that someone would do that. When that is said though I never said he was currently the best of our transfers but the one i was the most happy about acquiring.

  2. He has a lot of qualities: he is tall and strong. He has stamina and willingless to fight. He is also young so he has some room for improvment. He does however has one flaw: football.

  3. the chance he denied was offside anyway.

he was bought to add mentality to the team which was important in the beginning. but he is far from good enough with the ball. in a dominant team that Fonseca dreams about (and any possible successor will have to play in case he’ll be sacked – because we are Milan), he’ll never have a starting spot. He can be used in the final minutes of close games, but i rather think he wont be with us for long.

  4. The solution is at least two consecutive seasons as a starter so he can polish his technique and decision making. The talent is clearly there, but currently he’s still far from being a top defender. And Tuesday’s match was no exception. He made quite a few mistakes, and you can tell Theo is much more reluctant to do his runs when he’s on his side.

In general we should start aiming at buying ready made top players, and not just potential top players

  5. There are two types of CB. The intelligent kind that think ahead and the physical kind that use their physical abilities to react. The intelligent type tends to be a slower player that became intelligent by relying on thinking throughout their life. It’s risky to play with both CBs being intelligent or both CBs being physical. Chellini, Bonucci, Nesta, Kjaer are examples of intelligent defenders. Thiago Silva is a very rare example of a defender with both intelligence and physical advantage.

For this current Milan team, Gabbia is the only defender that thinks instead of rely on physical reactions. Thiaw, Tomori and Pavlovic have to be rotated. Playing two of those three at the same time will always be risky. Milan really do need to sign an intelligent veteran defender to rotate with Gabbia.

  6. I thought Pavlovic was awful in that game.
Yes he ran back and blocked a ball, you don’t need to be a good defender to do that.
He has good physical characteristics but he is an awful defender who we would have to loan for a couple of years.

What is the point of signing players who need 2 or 3 years before ready?

Just look at CDK, he was years away from being ready. Now he is worth around what we paid for him and it will be 2 or 3 years before Pavlovic is worth anything.
    Very poor recruitment
