Sweden boss reveals meeting with Ibrahimovic over return and confirms further discussions

By Oliver Fisher -

Sweden head coach Janne Andersson has confirmed that he held a meeting with Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Italy over his return to the national team.

Ibrahimovic has not played for Sweden since 2016 when he announced that he would retire from international football after the European Championships that year, and although there has been speculation about a possible return to playing for his country, nothing has ever materialised.

He put out a cryptic tweet on social media recently of him in a Sweden shirt with the caption ‘Long time no see’ and admitted in an interview with SportBladet earlier in the week that he misses playing for Sweden, and now their head coach Janne Andersson has seemingly opened the door.

According to what is being reported on Sweden’s official website Svenskfotball, Janne Andersson and Håkan Sjöstrand – the general secretary of the Swedish FA – flew down to Milan last night and they met today to discuss his return.

“When Zlatan was open to join the national team again it was important to meet and discuss this more. I’m glad we got a meeting this fast. The meeting was very good and we agreed to discuss it more,” Andersson said.
