Swedish journalist on Milan’s Ibrahimovic: “He would like to stay in Italy, he’s an icon for them”

A Swedish journalist has said that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is an icon for AC Milan and he does not want to leave Italy when his career ends in the near future.

The Swedish striker helped the Rossoneri win their most recent Serie A title back in the 2010/11 season and he then returned to the club in 2020.

Speaking whilst on Swedish television channel STV (via Milan News), Jennifer Wegerup explained that he was going to stop playing two years ago but that would have meant ending his career in an empty stadium during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Two years ago he was about to leave AC Milan, he would have only done half a season in the middle of the pandemic and without an audience, but a career like that would not have ended like that.

“It would have to end in front of crowded stands with fireworks and an inauguration. Having said that, it is not certain that he will leave after this season.”

Despite being injured for much of this season, Ibrahimovic is still held in very high regard by Milan fans and Wegerup believes that he is an icon in Milan now.

She also feels that he does not want to leave Italy and he could end up with an executive role in the game.

“He is so great, an icon for them. If he were to leave football he could become a sporting director or something like that. They don’t want to let him go and he would like to stay in Italy.”

Wegerup certainly does not see him returning to Sweden, saying: “Sweden is a small country. In Italy there is big football, big money, big names, big TV programmes. I don’t think he will leave.”
