CorSport: Testing February for Milan in a difficult moment begins with watershed derby

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are experiencing a very difficult run of form at the moment and they face Inter on Sunday in what is a derby that carries extra significance.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes this morning, after just one victory in seven matches and with the worst defensive record in Europe so far in 2023, Stefano Pioli’s team are preparing for another game that must be a turning point.

Milan are experiencing a gloomy moment, the darkest one of the Pioli management, and it is not an exaggeration to say that the Nerazzurri will arrive at the game in much better form than the Rossoneri so they will have less pressure.

On the one hand, the win in Riyadh in the Supercoppa provided a mental boost as well as being in better form generally, but on the other hand Milan can and will have to exploit the inertia that every derby can offer, a bit like what happened last February.

However, Pioli will be without some key players such as Mike Maignan, Alessandro Florenzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as well as the newly injury Ismael Bennacer and Fikayo Tomori who will almost certainly not be available.

After the derby, Milan will play against Torino on Friday 10 February, an opponent who have already emerged victorious twice this season. Then on the 14th there will be the Champions League round of 16 first leg against Spurs.

Milan will close the month of February with a game against an impressive Monza side, with Berlusconi and Galliani likely itching to get one over on their old club, and then at home against Atalanta, a direct competitor for the top four.
