Theo Hernandez of France

CM: Theo Hernandez ‘wants to stay at Milan for a long time’ – what he must prove

Theo Hernandez has made it clear through his agent that he wishes to renew with AC Milan and stay for a while longer yet, but concrete steps are awaited.

As Calciomercato.com write, Milan have gone from the euphoria of the win at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid to the disappointment of yet another two points thrown away against Cagliari on Saturday.

With a sieve-like defence that is increasingly worrying, Milan have got to yet another international break with more questions surrounding them than certainties. Forget the Scudetto, at the moment the Champions League places are six points away.

Theo ended up caught in the crosshairs of Paulo Fonseca after the draw in Sardinia, as he stated: “Theo can do better defensively, everyone can do more. We are working to correct important things.”

The French full-back has been inconsistent, giving the impression of not always approaching the various matches with the right mentality. Sometimes he gives the impression of not giving his all, all while incidents like the cooling break saga give the media ammunition.

However, when it comes to his Milan future things are more positive. Theo has ‘sent a clear message’ to the management through his agent Manuel Quillon that he ‘wants to stay at Milan for a long time’.

To achieve this, two conditions are needed: the renewal of his contract expiring in 2026 and a substantial increase in salary. There has been a delay in negotiations, but the defender must also now prove he deserves a salary in line with Rafael Leao, the highest earner in the squad.

  1. If Theo wants to stay, as claimed by this article, then he should prove that he wants to stay. His latest performances on the pitch don’t speak “I want to stay” but rather “I’m mad so I want to get out”. I think he should also understand that giving these same last performances, an 8M€ per year is out of question. I’m not against raising his salary to 6 or even 6,5, but beyond that is ridiculous for a player whose defending is currently on the same level that of a sunday league player. Plus realistically, no team will give him 8M€ per year, the teams that can are not interested by him.
On the other hand, the management should take this issue seriously and initiate the negociations as soon as possible (right now actually alongside Maignan). Losing Theo for free or even for a small price is not in our interest, it is better to renew to him and thus at least be able to sell him for a fair price if it comes to that.

    1. He’s a national team player with plenty of pace. Many teams outside of Europe can cough up 8mil/year from him. With better coaches they can drum up his defensive performances too. Theo leaves and we’re fielding who at LB? Terra?

We’re just lucky because his baby mama is comfortable in Milan and has businesses there. She clearly seems to be wearing the pants there. So it doesn’t seem like she’s moving anywhere.

      1. Renewing to him and him getting back to his 21/22 shape would of course be the best scenario, losing him for free would be the worst, but we have to be ready for everything right ?
When you say many teams outside of Europe I assume you’re meaning the saudis. Frankly I don’t see him going there, Ronaldo got an exception and was above the law but most players who went there complained about the life conditions. I don’t think it’s going to be a nice place for him and he probably knows it.
“With better coaches they can drum up his defensive performances too. Theo leaves and we’re fielding who at LB? Terra? ”
Well we’re gonna have Theo till the end of the season if it goes well, but with or without him we have to get a left-back.
Fonseca is surely partly responsible for the drop in performances, but Theo has his share of the blame.

  2. I said so many times we can sell theo he can be replaced easily the theo thinks he is above milan that’s why he doesn’t defend well

    1. It’s one thing to want to sell Theo, it’s a whole other thing to think he can be replaced easily. He can’t. There’s no one in our team and many other teams that can do what he does. It’s obvious he’s disillusioned by what’s happening at the club.

      1. Keep making excuses for professional spoiled millionaire players. Nothing is ever their fault. It’s the club’s fault Theo has no interest in playing defense and just ball watches on every cross rather than marking someone. How can we blame this on Zlatan…
I like that you are inside his head. And what exactly is he disillusioned about? That the club bends over backwards for him? That Fonseca continues to give him the captain’s armband despite him being the most selfish, undisciplined player on the team? Poor little fella. If he’s disillusioned about the team’s performance all he needs to do is look in the mirror. If he was playing better and being a proper leader, the team would be playing better.

        1. I never said Theo was/wasn’t at fault for anything. I’m just saying there’s no way we’re paying for someone of similar quality in that position. I’m referring to OP saying he can easily be replaced. That’s definitely not true, whether u like Theo or not. Me saying he’s disillusioned is just an opinion, we all have opinions around here esp u 😅

          1. Fair enough. There would be little trouble replacing Theo defensively. Offensively is a different story. If we played a 3CB formation with wingbacks Theo would be a great fit. But it’s hard to have a good defensive line when one player is never in the position he is suppose to be in.
And I’ve never seen anyone less deserving of the captain’s armband than Theo.

          2. O I have. Zapata. Montolivo. Dollar. Was Dollar captain? I think he was a couple times.
This is a good one. Bonuci.

At least Theo has some merit for captaincy even tho his personality doesn’t fit.

          3. “There would be little trouble replacing Theo defensively. Offensively is a different story. ”

Not that he’s been doing that well in the offensive phase lately either… Scudetto-season Theo is impossible to replace. Current one? Not as hard as people think.

  3. Heard it all before from CM – I don’t believe this for one second, I think he’s mentally decided to move on already. Love the player and think he’s probably the top left wing-back in the world at the moment, but we need to be planning for the future if he’s not going to sign a contract in the next couple of months.

Will be a super difficult to find and sort of suitable replacement, and watching Kerkez excel for Bournemouth is hard to watch, but it’s something the scouts and management need to be focused on now, if it gets to August without being sorted then it’s another case of ‘left it too late’.

    1. Well that’s the problem right there isn’t it? He’s playing LB but thinks he’s a wingback and plays like he’s a wingback even though we do not play in a wingback system.
And I would take Dimarco over him every day of the week.

  4. Super talented players (Theo and leao) that are not passionate for their team play below average frequently. Get players like Marota, less talent, but would die for the team. These guy’s obviously think they are too good for the squad. Get rid of them. Most times games are won by teams that are more hungry to win and who play for one another.
