Thiaw names the Milan team-mate he is closest to and lifts lid on call with Maldini

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw has named the person that he looks up to most in the dressing room, and also revealed details of a call he has with Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara.

Thiaw joined Milan from Schalke 04 in Germany at the start of this season and he had very limited involvement until 2023. The decision of Stefano Pioli to switch to a back three meant that there was a need for an extra defender and Thiaw took his chance superbly.

Now, he has established himself as probably the best of the summer signings that arrived last year, and he played 45 minutes against Lazio yesterday helping to contribute to the clean sheet in the 2-0 win.

Thiaw gave an interview to Sky in Germany about his time with Milan so far, and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.

On his role model in the dressing room: “Ismael Bennacer. I arrived in a champions’ dressing room. He took me by the hand, because I was silent and therefore similar to him.”

On life in Milan: “If I go out, I try to go to the Duomo area, the symbol of the city. But to tell the truth, they often have to force me to leave the house.”

On the video call meeting with Maldini and Massara: “I learned about it shortly before from my agent. I was agitated, but Paolo was kind and reassured me. He had followed me from before and so I was happy.”

On his arrival at Milan: “I had some doubts, but at the same time I was training and the staff talked to me a lot, so they believed in me. I tried to stay positive.”

On the best moment of his career: “The matches against Torino, Tottenham and Monza: there people noticed me and I received so many compliments. The performance against Harry Kane was of a very high level”.

On fighting for a place to play: “I learned at Milan that I have to prove myself in every single training session. It’s not enough to play well against Harry Kane, but then I also have to do well against Oshimen.”

On Ibra and what it’s like to play with him: “Crazy. Ibra is Ibra. He can be a kind person, but he’s extremely sure of himself. Training changes as soon as he participates. If you treat him with kid gloves, he doesn’t respect you. The tougher you are, the more he respects you.”
