CorSport: Three worrying signs emerge after Pioli’s experiments against PSV

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s final friendly of the winter did not go to plan in terms of the result or the performance as they lost 3-0 against PSV Eindhoven.

Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) recall that Milan lost the game 3-0 without much of a fight as Stefano Pioli’s team, admittedly having many absences, did convince from virtually all points of view.

Even though the season resumes on January 4 against Salernitana, Pioli still wanted to try some experiments to understand the reliability of certain players in view of Wednesday.

The first was Antonio Mirante in goal in place of Ciprian Tatarusanu, but the performance of the 39-year-old did not give the desired results and therefore a big question mark on the role of deputy goalkeeper remains.

Sergino Dest was tried at left-back with Theo Hernandez only back in training yesterday, and while it is the opposite side to his natural one it was a nightmare for the American as Noni Madueke ran riot and scored two goals by cutting onto his left foot.

Finally, there was Yacine Adli who played on the left in the usual role of Rafael Leao – who came off the bench – with the Frenchman providing a performance with a few isolated flashes and nothing more concrete.

  1. Not worried about Mirante. He’s a backup and rusty. The rest is worrisome but even moreso is Pioli’s inability to change formation when our roster demands it.

    1. Yeah, to me it’s pretty obvious unless CDK steps up quickly time to Implement a 4-3-3 or some variation of 3-4-3/3-5-2. I think Dest and Saelemaekers would be good fits at RWB, CB is the only position with any depth and just maybe teams won’t have such an easy time marking us. The game yesterday was so static because the players didn’t know how to move to creat opening. Every pass (that wasn’t just an outright terrible pass) was telegraphed. Pioli your tactics are discovered!

  2. I would say Adli’s decision making was awful, In my opinion he would struggle in a youth side with what he displayed yesterday. Noni former Tottenham youth whom I know well is 2004 and he was light years better then any of your players. Starting to question our strategy… we need to spend some money on a solid player, someone like Felix class, pair him with Leao, get someone at the right side and a good center forward. Young players will get their chance, but we need quality now

    1. Are you new here!? Can’t spend money you don’t have. UEFA is dead set on making sure all Italian clubs (accept Juve) have one hand tied behind their backs via FFP. If you can come up with a better plan to improve the squad/results or secure a transfer without a transfer budget please share. But this whole Milan are so stupid cuz they just don’t buy better players is reductive and makes you sound dumb. Either follow the club or stop the nonsense

  3. Why are you all so negative ,these are friendly matches ..The best players were on duty at the World Cup …let’s remain optimistic..Giroud will be back and when he plays we are a much better team .He is technically brilliant and hold up play superb ,as these allows space for wide players to move into .Olivier will score 20 goals this season ..Then rafeol leao Is back he has awesome abilty and can penetrate any defence he works so well with Giroud, and of course creates goals for him .Rafeol will easily score 20 goals plus .
Then Theo handandez a player with such stamina and tackling abilty and of course scorer of some truly spectacular goals …This season we can win the scuddeto again ..let’s remain optimistic.
