Tomori must be careful against Sassuolo as derby suspension looms

By Isak Möller -

Fikayo Tomori is expected to play from start in AC Milan’s clash against Sassuolo, having returned from suspension. However, he must be very careful in order to avoid another one, which would keep him on the sidelines for the derby,

Tomori served a suspension in the Europa League on Thursday evening and while Milan’s defensive display wasn’t terrible, with above all Matteo Gabbia stepping up, he was still missed. Tomorrow afternoon, as the Rossoneri take on Sassuolo, he should be back from start.

The Englishman has received four yellow cards in the league this season and as a result, he’s just one card away from suspension. It’s something that he will desperately try to avoid tomorrow, as a suspension would keep him out of action for the important derby.

Milan have options for the centre-back position, but none of them have the same characteristics as Tomori. Gabbia and Simon Kjaer, for example, are much more similar style-wise while Malick Thiaw is a mix of these two and Tomori.

In short, Tomori must avoid a yellow card at all costs and it remains to be seen how Pioli will handle the matter. Perhaps he could be subbed off earlier than he otherwise would be.

    1. Unless he gets some playing time, he would not be fit for a demanding game such that of Inter. One can see this taking the example of Benacer, he is not even a shadow of what he was before his injury. He needs time to realign with the rhythm of play. I hope Benacer will find his form during the Sassuolo game, although personally I prefer Adli.

  1. This won’t make sense. If we’re gonna rotate heavily to preserve players, might as well no start with a player whose is at risk of being suspended for the derby.
