Tomori happy with three-man defence but insists the ‘defensive concepts haven’t changed’

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori believes that the switch to a three-man defence has helped the team, but the concepts have not changed.

Milan climbed back into the top four with a 1-0 victory against Monza last night which marked a third consecutive clean sheet and a third game in a row with a one-goal margin of victory, which comes after a seven-game winless run.

The hope is that Stefano Pioli and the squad have now managed to turn things around to get the top four push back on course, while the 1-0 win over Spurs in the Champions League last 16 first leg makes reaching the quarter-finals a possibility too.

Tomori spoke to SportMediaset after the game against Monza and admitted that the team have struggled during the early part of 2023 but have now hopefully turned a corner, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

“We suffered, but after a January like this, it’s important to suffer and not suffer goals. We can say that we are healed. We must continue like this, working, hoping to continue with this form to continue winning,” he said.

Has the three-man defence restored certainties?

“In my opinion yes, but the defensive concepts haven’t changed. Now we have one more player in defence, but when we attack we do it quickly. We could have scored more, but the three points and the clean sheet, as we are now, is positive.”

Is Ibrahimovic helping you too?

“He always talks, he’s a great champion. Having him by our side is important for us.”
