Tomori reflects on European journey and adds: “I feel like a Milan fan”

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori has claimed that the best possible birthday present for him would be three points against Monza, while he also reflected on the team’s European journey so far.

Tomori has been in exceptional form for Milan this season and there are times when he has had to command the rearguard virtually on his own, especially recently with Theo Hernandez as his centre-back partner and Alessandro Florenzi at left-back by virtue of the injury crisis.

He returned to his home country in midweek for a Champions League game against Newcastle and he was one of the most impressive performers, even being named the MVP from the match by fans, and now that form must continue in the league after the Rossoneri let in three goals against Atalanta last time out.

Tomori did an interview with SportMediaset about a number of different topics from the victory against Newcastle to the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with his comments relayed by Radio Rossonera and translated below.

How do you reflect on the Champions League journey?

“At the beginning of the season we wanted to get through the Champions League group, now we will face the Europa League with the knowledge that we can do well. In Newcastle we spoke at half-time, we said to each other that we had to give everything and there was nothing left to lose. We had a good performance in the second half and now we have to bring this spirit to the league too.”

Starting from Sunday against Monza…

“We are working on staying concentrated and focused for 95 minutes, for the entire match. Lately we have lost some of points and now we have to think above all about ourselves rather than looking at the standings.”

What’s the ideal birthday gift (he turns 26 next week)?

“The three points on Sunday.”

Are you happy with Ibrahimovic’s return?

“He has a winning mentality, he always wants to win and he was like that whether on the pitch or when he was injured. I expect him to be like that this time too, it’s a mentality that aligns well with Milan. I’m happy that he will be with us again.”

How do you feel at Milan?

“When I arrived here I hadn’t played for almost a year, they immediately gave me a lot of advice to improve, I feel valued and this makes the difference for me. I feel like a Milan fan.”
