AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali has named the return derby against Inter last season as the moment that the Scudetto dream became something very tangible.
Milan went into that game trailing their city rivals and knowing that a defeat would put a huge and potentially fatal dent in their hopes of winning a 19th league title, and they trailed at the break due to an Ivan Perisic strike from a corner.
However, Olivier Giroud became the hero as he scored a quickfire brace to turn the game on its head and get the Rossoneri right back in the Scudetto hunt, and they ended up going on to lift the league title.
Tonali is on the cover of today’s edition of Icon Magazine and he spoke about the challenges that the team are facing this season, with his comments relayed by SempreMilan.it.
“The next goal is to repeat what we did last year, which is the hardest thing: we all have to stay focused on our dream,” he said.
On his background: “Since I was a teenager I understood that, despite my family and friends always in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, in this world I was alone and had to learn to manage myself.”
On last season’s derby win: “After the return derby we realised that it was a different year, that we were there through our own merits and that we didn’t have to waste any more games.
“At that point it was all simple, even though we knew we had to win them all. But when we were preparing the matches during the week we realised how excited we were, and therefore things were very simple on the pitch.”
