Tonali ‘sorry’ after draw with Lille; believes Milan showed they can be ‘a great team’ without Ibra

By Oliver Fisher -

Midfielder Sandro Tonali is ‘sorry for the result’ after AC Milan let a lead slip against Lille to draw 1-1 in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Milan made the trip to the Stade Pierre Mauroy knowing that a win would allow them to take back top spot in the group and subsequently a big step towards qualifying for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Although Samu Castillejo gave Milan a lead early in the second half, they were unable to see the game out and return to Italy with all three points as Jonathan Bamba scored an equaliser after a moment of defensive chaos.

Tonali was interviewed by Sky Italia after the game, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

“We deservedly took the lead, we didn’t dominate but we held the ball well, so we are sorry for the result,” he said.

Milan felt the absence of Ibrahimovic in some of their attempted hold-up play, but Tonali believes that he and his team-mates showed they can be ‘great’ without him.

“Ibra helps and his qualities and his plays help. Playing with a champion like him is always easier but today we have shown that we can play as a great team even without him.”

  1. No, we did not deserve to take the lead. For most of the first half, our only interest was to waste as much time as possible, and ,for us supporters, to see the worst side of Milan.
