Totti takes a jab ahead of Europa League tie: “No longer the Milan it once was”

By Oliver Fisher -

Francesco Totti has taken a bit of a jab at AC Milan ahead of their Europa League meeting with Roma, claiming that they are not the team that they once were.

Milan beat Slavia Praha 7-3 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals of the competition, and the draw took place on Friday in Switzerland. Some teams looked like fierce opponents on paper such as Bayer Leverkusen and Liverpool, but the possibility of drawing a domestic rival emerged.

As it turned out, the Rossoneri were the first ball out and they got domestic rivals Roma who beat Brighton 4-1 in the last 16, with the winner of Bayern Leverkusen versus West Ham potentially awaiting in the semi-finals.

Totti spoke at an event for Betsson.sport and he was asked for his thoughts on the fact that his former side were drawn in an all-Italian clash against Roma, which will take place next month over two legs.

“The further you go in a competition the more complicated it becomes, sooner or later you meet all the strongest teams,” he said (via Radio Rossonera).

“The Rossoneri are doing well, they have added 3/4 players of quality and quantity. It will be a beautiful and open tie, I hope that Roma get through. Milan’s European DNA? It will be an additional factor for them, but it is no longer the Milan it once was…”

The former playmaker was questioned on what he thinks regarding the impact that Daniele De Rossi has made, given he has led Roma very much into a fight for fourth place.

“I didn’t expect him to do so well straight away but I hoped he would. He is proving to be a great coach and I, like all the Giallorossi fans, hope he continues at this level.

“Roma are a difficult place and are demonstrating his value. Knowing the city, the fans and the club well and therefore bringing all this together to ensure that the players perform with maximum peace of mind.”

  1. He is not wrong- this isn’t close to a Berlusconi level Milan, and now even Roma’s wagebill is higher than ours. But his Roma with Batigol, Tommasi etc was also way stronger than this Roma.

    1. higher wage bill and always finish behind Milan. overral if you campare squads they have 0 wc players while we have 3. Head to head , last time roma beat Milan was 2019 since then Milan wins or draws.. :O

Totti can dream but reality will hit hard

      1. Their high wage bill was thanks to Mou getting half their team from Psg and the Epl. Good for them listening to that guy

        1. Think most of it are lukaku and dybala. It’s not that higher anyway. Their bill is 20M higher and they are 16M of that

    2. Tomassi was the least in that team. Roma had Samuel and peak Cafu. In any case, they’ve been to two consecutive European finals. They’re no pushovers.

      1. yeah the manager that took them there is gone, but by your logic with him gone they are stronger

so which is it? You cant have it both ways

wtf is this 10 year old logic

      1. Lol Milan position per position are a better team. Just look at the facts. Roma has one of the worst wage bills in relation to results in all of Europe.

  2. Gonna be an exciting tie. I see us edging Roma over two legs because our team is of higher quality. bUt it will be tight.

Unfortunately again the first tie is at San Siro as statistically the teams which play the second leg at home have a much higher chance of progressing.

We beat this team twice before already. And while under DeRossi they have been playing better and with more enthusiasm, tactically DDR is not close to Pioli.

    Hopefully Pioli gets it right.

  3. Totti not wrong about ACM . This team still far from 2007 squad that win CL but this team still development & have great potential unlike Roma that only depend on loan & free transfer player , just add 3 player World class in striker , DMF ,RB and this team can compete with city or RM
