Tuttosport: Defender set to return to Milan as Atalanta make final decision on option to buy

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will have to resolve the future of Mattia Caldara as the defender is set to return after his loan spell with Atalanta, a report claims.

Caldara returned to Atalanta from Milan in January 2020 on an initial loan until June 2021 but with an option to buy set at round €15-18million depending on which source you believe. He started strong with La Dea, returning to being a starter, but after a number of injuries and having lost his place in the line-up it has been thrust into doubt that the Bergamo club will pay so much to keep him.

According to today’s edition of the newspaper Tuttosport (via MilanNews), Atalanta will not redeem Caldara, who will therefore return to Milan. At this point the Rossoneri will have to decide what to do with the defender, who has a contract with the club until 30 June 2023. The options are either a sale, a new loan or perhaps he could even force his way back into the plans.

  1. Actually he still a good defender if he fit. If romagnoli leave, he still have a good chance to play for milan

  2. Give him a chance to get his spot during pre-season and let Romagnoli GO. Fee for around 20-25 million from Romagnoli can be used for Tomori or to buy another CB if he cannot convince Pioli as the third strong CB for UCL.

  3. think he got thing to proof. just find him a good doctor and fitness coach. as when he is fit he is quite good cb. milan planned for tomori as starter with kjaer next year anyway. so caldara as backup with gabbia not a bad plan. cb spot not an urgent quest.

  4. He could be a good backup and I think they should keep him as it is hard they can get any reasonable amount for him, definitely not a bad player but injuries messed him up.
