Lille's Portuguese head coach Paulo Fonseca

Tuttosport: Fonseca to meet Marseille as Milan must resolve Pioli issue first

Paulo Fonseca will have a series of meetings in the coming days after which he hopes that he will have a clearer understanding of his future, and AC Milan remain in the running.

According to this morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews), Fonseca had a long conversation with Olivier Letang yesterday, who is the president of Lille, and today he is expected to meet Pablo Longoria who holds the same role at Marseille.

Les Phocéens are a club that have had him in its sights for some time, as per the paper. In addition to Lille’s renewal proposal and Marseille’s offer (three-year contract worth €3.5m net per year), the Portuguese coach is also in the sights of Milan.

However, the Rossoneri first want to resolve things with Stefano Pioli who will lead his side on Saturday for the last time against Salernitana. He still has one year left on his contract which, when including his staff, would cost the club around €11m gross.

It remains to be seen whether the long-awaited meeting between Milan and Pioli will take place already this week or whether it will instead take place after the team returns from Australia where they have friendly match against Roma on May 31st.

Once the situation with Pioli is resolved, the Diavolo managers will focus on the new coach. At the moment Fonseca is still in pole position, but also watch out for the candidacy of Mark van Bommel who obviously has a strong bond with the club.

Among other things, before returning to PSV Eindhoven in 2012 when he was a player, he said that one day he would return to Milanello, perhaps as a coach. It is a prophecy that could also come true in the coming weeks.

  1. Well, as Fonseca seem to have 3 offers (stay at Lille, join Marseille or Milan), he might not wait for Milan to not lose other opportunity, because he might be left with nothing.

On the one hand I would be happy for him to stay in France, but… by taking a look at what happened with Lopetegui – fans boycotted him and we are left with even worse coaches to choose from – when Fonseca would choose France then our next alternative might be some new Giampaolo, so even worse one.

They should have not been listening to fans and sign Lopetegui, when they knew their alternatives were Van Bommel and Fonseca. Lopetegui coached with success Spain National team (2 years without a single lost match) and won Europa League with Sevilla, something that Fonseca/Bommel can only dream about.

  2. Would it be possible, if lets say fonseca decides to not join milan, conceincao decides to stay at porto, and van bommel does join Milan, that the management will then turn and try to get De Zerbi? Im saying this since rumor is management isnt actively talking to De Zerbi atm. If all the current managers out there fall through, will milan try then to get de zerbi?

  3. So, Klopp said no, Lopetegui was told no by fans. Pioli Is still on contract his team needs to be paid.

Say what you want, but Pioli is already a Milan legend. Cardinale fired Maldini, another legend of this club.

The second most prestigious club in Europe is now an asset that needs to grow every year. So, no, we won’t pay 5 millions to RDZ plus his wage plus his players.

What if, all things considered, keep Pioli and invest heavy on two CBs and two ST. We cannot play Gabbia Caldara and hope RDZ win anything…
